After watching a bunch of clips and the opening (or trying to anyway) I concluded Lucky Star was not for me.

Yes, read the manga. If you liked the anime, you have to read the manga. xD

Ah, Claymore. I may not like the anime as much as the manga, but I enjoyed it quite a bit. Of course, the anime ending diverges from the manga, and some people hate that, but I still found the anime ending ok.

To me it is not so much a problem of diverging from the manga, but how. The anime ending really made no sense at all, imho it was simply very bad. But we'll see what Shelf Life has to say about it, in some months I guess ^^

Bamboo made Lucky Star sound especially good for Asperger syndrome hermits with no "real life" friends. Thus, I think I should check it out. If I ever find some money one of these days, of course.

The fanservice part of Negima kills it for me. I mean, I like the cute girls, but it's a bit (LOT) too far.

I think ultimately we can say of Kanon what we can say of a lot of niche-shows. It's an acquired taste, but it's quality for what it's meant to be. If you liked how it went in the first seven or so episodes, you'll like how it progresses to the end.

If you despised its unrealistic, melodramatic, aimless, cute-in-a-fetishy-way guts from the get-go, it only gets worse. Wink

Oh, and yay for a vague Jars of Clay reference. I was one of those cradle Christians who was raised on that music, so I caught it. Smile

heh, totally my first reaction, too... though decided not to say anything as I didn't know if it was intentional or not.

Boy, am I dumb. I've heard their music as well, but the reference totally went over my head. I was more of a dcTalk/Newsboys fan myself (I actually have a copy of the Newsboys movie, which is surprisingly funny).

One of the band members' uncle passes away, but leaves him the family circus. The band agrees to go to Australia and help the circus do one last show in order to raise money for the uncle's widow. The gang learns to become clowns, juggling, magic, etc., and needless to say, hilarity ensues. One of the members of the circus is actually one of the Newsboys, who is not a member of the band in the movie but slowly befriends them.

What makes the beginning brilliant is that they take their existing song about the boy who joins the circus and writes letters to his parents into the movie (after writing the "first verse" in the letter, he comments, "huh....rhymes"). There are tons of funny moments, probably my favorite character is the cynical clown who is both trying to teach the band about the fundamentals of the circus and also desperately trying to capture a hilarious moment on film to send it in to "America's Wackiest Home Videos!".

Pretty funny (it often incorporates their music in really bizarre ways), but probably hard to find. As far as I know, it was only on VHS, and I only got a copy because my church library was selling some older stuff.

ah my god! I would kill for a DVD release of that. I have no idea what I would think of it now, but when I was a kid I though it the greatest thing ever. There was some scene toward the beginning about hot dogs that always destroyed me.

From what I can tell, the movie is called "Newsboys: Down Under The Big Top." Some copies of the VHS are available on Amazon's Marketplace, but there doesn't seem to be a DVD release.

Because the Newsboys are one of the best Christian bands EVER?

I mean, how do you get past the awesomeness that is Breakfast?

*will refrain from rambling more about them for fear of going too OT, but...*

Out of the lot, Claymore at least some what stimulates the mind, instead of numbing it, or only stimulating the groin, like the rest.

Lucky Star stimulates the groin? I must have missed some episodes.
They seem to go out of their way to de-emphasize the visual appeal of the characters in a sexual manner, and focus on making them appealing as to their actions as characters.

The episode where Tsukasa gets the phrase "Basalmic Vinegar" stuck in her head and repeats it several times resonated with me.
