So does that mean only through Right Stuf, or is Right Stuf acting as distributor? I hope it's the latter, I find Right Stuf's shipping to Canada to be very slow and expensive compared to alternative sources and I can only justify using it as a "reward" for Nozomo licensing my favourite series (Aria, Emma, etc.) But for the final 2 discs of NHK... I'm going to have to calculate if the extra shipping cost will make it better to just get the boxset through other sources and toss the discs I already have. :S |
That's a good question. I suppose I don't actually mind if I can only get the disc through Right Stuf, as long as I can get it at all. Right Stuf will ship to Canada for free if you spend over $150. I know that's a lot, but if you put away for some other box sets you want at the same time (and keep in mind this is months from now and you can make up a wishlist of stuff to get all at once) maybe you can defer the extra cost. Hopefully some other online retailers, like Amazon, will get some of the volumes, though and it won't end up being an issue.

I'm just really happy right now. After the terrible week I've been having (on top of the news about these discs) this is a very nice piece of news to get. I never did get to writing the e-mail I was planning in complaint as they made their decision so quickly on the heels of the first one, but I think I will send Funimation a thank you e-mail now. They're basically doing exactly what I had suggested they do in the other thread, so I owe them at least a thanks (and of course, my money when volume 6 comes out in a few months). |

| I find it funny that people say to stop your bitching, but if it happened to them, they'd probably be just as pissed. If you bought all the volumes up to date, BOUGHT, and they said that all that money is worthless and they want more, then anyone has the right to be pissed off. So i don't see why any apology would be necessary. Also, I'm not collecting these series, so I'm not biased in any way under this situation and I can completely see their point of view. |

On one hand, it's kinda cool that Customer Relations common sence won over Business Common Sence for once
On the other, this sets a rather nasty president with fans thinking that they can call every shot... |

Good idea. Sending thank you letter now.
I'm SO HAPPY! Now I can go and start buying Darker than Black again!
Thank you so much Funi for doing this! |

How would you feel if you spent over $100 for the fisrt 5 vol's. and they didn't releast the 6th vol?
Im not collecting those series to but it would be very wrong if they didn't release the 6th volume. |

I don't expect them to make money, but if they play there cards right they might even make some. But that's doubtful. Even so I don't expect the loss to be massive. What they are doing is protecting the releases of there future shows. In the anime market today, losing even a measly 500-1000 fans, just isn't acceptable. |
especially when a good portion of those 500-1000 fans are the ones who actually spend a significant amount of money buying anime. sure, in the short term this may end up costing funi a bit more money to cater to a relatively small gorup of fans, but i think they realised they'd lose more in the long run by alienating the people who were actually willing to spend the money to buy singles and artboxes.
now if only funi would have announced that they were re-releaseing kanon 4 & 5 too this announcement would have been just about perfect. considering what they're going for on ebay, i think it would be worth the effort. |

Well that's really good to see. I think they've made the right choice. It may end up being a bit of a financial loss but they've showed that they care about their customers as well as listen to them and that's going to help them in the long run.

Are you saying this was all planned from the beginning, so no one should have had any fear? I don't think so. Fans giving feedback through there feedback email like I did, is not whining. It is letting FUNI know what you think, which is the whole purpose of feedback. And if staff read fora, it is for the same reasons.
And I am starting to get up there these days, but I hope to God I am never that crotchety. | You can think what you like, but you have no proof one way, or another, that they did or didn't plan on releasing singles, unless they come back and say so. Some adults like to tease the kiddies, and the last time I was at FUNi's forums it was a right crèche. |
Wait wait wait. Let's just examine what you're saying here for a moment.
-You're saying there is no way to prove they weren't going to release the singles all along so we all just ought to assume they were? Also, those of us who didn't choose to assume this should apologize for doubting them?
-They opted to first announce there would be no release of the individual volumes first because...they thought it would be funny to piss off a bunch of their customers. A major company opts to risk serious harm to their reputation among consumers because it's funny to mess with them?
Does that sound as crazy in your head as it does in mine? |

Nope. Only Volume 1 was ever released. They lost the license right before Vol 2 plus box was supposed to come out. I had it pre-ordered at Rightstuf and it never shipped. |

I'm glad to hear that about welcome to the nhk. I had planned to complete the series either way, but Red Garden is going to be a boxset for me- unless they strip the extras (if there were any). They it might be a studio sale purchase.
Either way i'mg lad to see people get what they want. But does that mean Rightstuf canceled peoples orders that they might have bought during the Funi sale? Can they re-order or what? |

And all the combatants can now retire from the field.
It's good to see that FUNi can reconsider on a "less than practical from the supporters of singles purchase" decision. I actually had only 1 volume to go for Red Garden. I'll send a thank you email later.
I can now order Welcome to NHK and Negima !? collections since I was holding off until FUNi reached a decision for the single buyers of Red Garden (obviously), Welcome to NHK and Pumpkin Scissors. |

Even shopping at Best Buy, you're usually paying more for your anime than if you buy online. TRSI and Robert's are the most reliable online retailers in my opinion if you're worried about an order being screwed up or something being damaged in transit.
I'm not trying to make you change your ways, I'm just saying you can buy more for less online. (Feed the anime addiction and still have some money for gas and food!) |

I'm not so sure there is a blanket precedent here. Perhaps it will set a precendent for future license handovers. It will be expected that the format of the original licensor's release is honored for the people who paid for previous volumes, especially as it regards single DVD releases that had art boxes or special editions. Not a bad win for the fans and collectors if you ask me, and considering that collectors like myself are still a dearly loyal DVD buying base for companies like Funimation (we can be relied upon to buy the special editions and art boxes and finish sets of series) I don't see it opening the door to Funimation being "pushed around" by its customers on every issue.
I would, however argue that alienating collectors will undoubtedly make them wary of even starting collections in the future, for fear that they may not be able to finish them. That might not be as big a financial risk for the licensor as underselling series, but it still is one. Full or half seasons sets are only appealing to people who know they already like a series and are willing to drop the extra cash to own more than a sample, but only offering a box to a collector who has only watched anime through DVDs so far will make them much more selective in their buying habits than they've been before.
I can remember a time when there was no anime at the local Blockbuster and my internet connection was still dial-up so I wasn't exactly watching streams. I would go into Sam Goody or FYE and just browse, pick up a single volume 1 DVD and buy it to see if I liked it. I know this practice has fallen by the wayside in this new age of high speed internet and online DVD rental clubs (even for me), but the "collectors mentality" does still exist and those collectors are the ones who are most upset when things like this happen. Funimation has seemed to have picked up on that and made a choice that might be a financial risk to them, but I'm confident will only keep their customer base satisfied and taking more chances with them in the long run.
