Good for Gonzo. After years of losing money on mediocre shows that were clearly conceived with an eye on the dwindling American market (no wonder they go after fansubbers so much), they finally started to cater to the Japanese audience.

Last I heard; a lot of the "Japanese audience" thought the show was nothing but cheap otaku-baiting crap. (And yet his is the very argument coming from fans of Welcome to NHK and Clannad.)

Also; you'll have people who didn't like "Tower of Druaga." But hey.

Finally; NO. The last thing I'd want is a sub-only release. Strike Witches has too much "international" appeal to be released "half-arsed."

I don't see why anyone should be so surprised that they sell so little. When you charge about $60 for two episodes. Frankly, I don't see how they even sell 10,000 units like this.

Dedicated fans who want to see a second season.

See, the cameltoes were there for a reason. Laughing

The question people should ask: When will Funimation license and dub it? Cool

Probably never. Crunchyroll has the internet rights. FUNi would prob have to pay Crunchyroll some money to get it on their site. Also GONZO is prob getting a better deal with Crunchyroll. Also, FUNi would have lost a significant income from the internet crowd. People don't like to double dip.

It's prob best for GONZO to leave it on Crunchyroll and let the internet audience continue to buy it.

That's a pretty big demographic though, isn't it? Razz At least I know I'm a part of it.

Actually, that's just the regular edition...the limited edition, which I reckon made up more of these sales (it's sold out now), is closer to $80.

It's a shame, America is full of incredibly undevoted fans.
Ah yeah, I remember the president of Funimation, Gen Fukanawa or whatever his name is, saying, "We will never license a show, at all, unless we can get the full internet rights." So maybe it will have to be another company. Why not Bandai? They're releasing Rocket Girls, that's a vaguely similar concept...

And "leave it on the internet only" isn't a feasible option, because there's a good difference in terms of the broadcast and DVD versions (uncensored).

If it's truly that riskee in DVD format, then the big 3 (FUNi, Bandai and Viz) won't touch it with a 20 ft. poll.

It would go to Media Blasters who would release it sub only. I also challenge people to find a Media Blasters title in a B&M. It's near impossible. Besides, GONZO could still release the DVD version online if it wanted to.

In the end, GONZO would still get a better deal with Crunchyroll.

I don't know. It feels mighty small sometimes compared to the hordes who seem to love CR.

Agreed. I'm not sure how censored the internet showings were but some of the TV airings were heavily censored. Not only that but Dvd quality is way way better than what you can get on youtube bost tv and CR.

I didn't mean all Japanese viewers would like Strike Witches. I just meant that kind of show is very popular over there. Just look at the sales charts in this very site. It's always moe, Golden Eggs, Miyazaki or established franchises.

It's been a long time since a Gonzo show sold this well in Japan, and I take it as sign that they were seriously out of touch with Japanese fans.

Edit: I just realized that the article mentions Youtube and CrunchyRoll, but not BOST TV. Jesus, does ANN have some sort of paid deal with CR to never mention it's competitors in relevant news articles?

The linked article references Gonzo's own press release in June that specifically mentioned YouTube and Crunchyroll, but not BOST TV. BOST TV's participation was confirmed later when the Strike Witches series actually premiered.

I predict this will be picked up in the States, released sub only, and the sales will be not so good.Smile

They are all over Best Buy. At least the ones near me.

Man, some of you guys are really pushing for this Gonzo title to be subbed-only if by any chance this gets licensed. Rolling Eyes

We got a good steak of bilingual Gonzo releases here (of course whether some are good or bad is another question).

You can't find them in my area.

But those are mainstream R1 titles for the most part. The cameltoes would definitely put this out of mainstream consideration.

OTOH, I think 10 000 anime sales used to be the hit line in America. Kiki's Delivery Service hit a million a decade ago. That seems so far away now. To think, a Pixar film just takes a few days to reach a million sales. Shocked

Many movies and some American TV shows can reach a million in sales in their first week. Iron Man sold a little over 5 million in its first week.

-_-

You know... Some people do like the shows for what's beneath rather than just this 'otaku bait' I believe you claim it has.

But I guess it's true, there are a lot of fans just for the moe or the otaku focused comedy. I personally could never get into NHK but that's just because... I couldn't find it to my liking. Lucky Star was preferable on that whole otaku comedy front.

Back on topic, I'm so not surprised this sold like it did. As someone said, Gonzo finally got the right idea. Just like how dreamy boys will sell a shoujo manga, cute girls with no pants will sell an anime series.

And we all know both of those statement are true.

Hell I'm one of those 10,000 that bought a copy. They had a "special edition" version that came with an artbook and some other extra. I did get wallet raped for about $90 bucks.

However I really like Fumikane Shimada's artwork/designs. That's why i picked it up.

But any major distributor in the US I doubt will touch this series with a 10 foot pole. Crunchy roll has nothing to lose. The girls are a little too young even for media blaster i think.

So does that make me the only person who watched it because they found the plot interesting?
