I've never watched all of Saikano. And I've never watched the dub. But from what I've heard from the the clips provided, they don't sound bad at all. And that part about "We did something we shouldn't have, didn't we?" sounded just fine to me. The words themselves maybe flat but there was nothing flat about the voice actresses reading.

Also, at the beginning of the column it was mentioned that the writer hoped that dub would good enough to make him cry again. Obviously he just had a case of high expectations. And that unless the writer is the type to cry at a movie even during the second or third viewing, those expectations were unfairly high.

I've only heard the first episode of the dub, but I wasn't too impressed with it, either. It was a competent job, but Shuji's narration was particularly distracting, and the speaking didn't always sound natural.

Did I have high expectations? Well, look at the avatar. Saikano's my favorite short series, and while I can't speak for Ryan, I know I'm prone to a few tears even when I rewatch some parts of the show. So far the dub's not a disaster, but it's not one of the better ones of the year, either. Two and a half stars sounds about right.
