Good grief. Shocked That has to be one of the biggest, if not THE biggest, anime collection that I have ever seen on Shelf Life. I must say congratulations to you and your wife for having taken the time to acquire such a magnificently large collection. You are an inspiration to us all. Anime catgrin

I'm looking to get a big collection myself (even though I don't have that much space in my room). My goal is to have an anime collection big enough so that I wouldn't need to watch what's on TV (seriously. The programming is mostly dreadful these days Sad ).

It's too bad that you don't have any VHS tapes, as there are quite a few out-of-print titles available online. It's a good thing that I have a VHS tape player in my room, as I have a used copy of The Ultimate Teacher, along with some tapes from the days before I got used to the idea of DVDs.

Not quite. Review and ratings and critics provide a guide, barometer, compass or whatever you want to call it.
I tend to think of them as "road signs". They tell you where the title is going, how far away the distination is, and warns of any obstacles along the way. It's up to you if you want to go that way, or not. Wink

If that's the case, there's certainly a mighty few car-on-tree collisions in that collection...

What might be a car crash in YOUR collection could be.....um.....a car wash(?) in their collection.

Confused I don't know where I was going with that.......

Wow, what a collection! That couple can start their own store or something. Nevermind, they would probably never be willing to part with it. Excuse my comment.

I am itching for Ouran to be released!! Ready the review, I am only more anxious. October 28 - get here faster!

my game collection dwarfs their's , but dear God the anime part puts me to shame, i also hope i have a wife a chill as that that shares my interest, because its a lot easier to collect and see new stuff if you both like it

i like both ouran and rozen maiden, and i believe funi is releasing a collection of rozen maiden season one soon

Not necessarily. They said they started collecting in the spring of 2006. At that time, Sailor Moon was still available through normal retail channels. And later that year, RightStuf had all of the CCS TV available as a megabundle for $79.99.

Ug, don't remind me. I was like, 2 weeks late on getting a debit card for that sale. It cost me dearly.

In your opinion, but unless you're paying their rent and for their collections, then that opinion really doesn't matter.

Sorry. I knew there was a question I forgot to answer when I last posted. Anyways, we got CCS on uber-sale from RightStuf for $80, for Dunbine we paid $200 for vol.1-12, and Sailor Moon was $150 each for seasons 1 and 2, and $30 a disc for S and SuperS.

We plan to watch them all before we die, hopefully multiple times even. As I said before, no kids. Ever. Perhaps someday our guinea pigs will inherit them. :p

Actually we have a La Blue Girl VHS boxset. Sharla also has a whole box of VHS fansubs from before we met.

Ye Gods! It's simply amazing that they amassed that much in 2 1/2 years. The jealousy I feel over that finished Sailor Moon collection is quite intense, as I never got all the SuperS disks and don't have the movies. Lucky, lucky people.
But that right there, is one of the reasons why I'm trying to convince my boyfriend to marry me - we can combine our collections, to form an ultra-collection, albeit with a lot of doubles. Although it still might not be as mighty as this one.
Just a question for the shelf owners though - are you by any chance Right Stuf customers? I found their site around April 2006 as well, and have noticed that my collection has increased dramatically since then.

edit: oops, just noticed, they are Right Stuf customers. I was right!

Though it must suck to add dvds into it when everything's organized alphabetically; a full shelf equals the rest movin' on down the line until the very end (or space is found to be had). That's a lot of shuffling if you're adding into, say, the B's. Laughing

Elves: Yes. Yes it is and yes it does.

The trick to that is eventually you get fed-up and leave empty spaces, every few letters, after major reshelving cycles ... and pray like mad they last long enough to provide a decent amount of time between major cycles.

kittycatgirl2k: I would say that between the two of us, we've watched roughly about 1/3 of it. Unfortunately that's one of the collection's dark secrets - we spend more time acquiring it than enjoying it (although acquiring is part of the enjoyment Anime smile). The other dark secret is that we've chosen to forgo children in favour of anime so unfortunately we will not be adopting any of you any time soon. As far as our tastes go, Sharla and I are pretty much on the same page with the exception of maybe a handful of titles. We've really lucked out in that respect, although I started out like your current S/O so it hasn't always been a rosy path.

Shhhhh ... don't scare the normal folks. Though I'm curious how much were after-the-fact (at least a disc in before buying) versus purchased to watch? Oh, and not a child, so I can keep my aplication in, right?

Really kicking myself over skipping the CCS clearance sale, but just couldn't bring myself to justify so many singles (14-16 discs?) worth of shelf space. I didn't expect the thinpaks to disappear so darn fast.

i love collecting also but only if i plan to watch/read or what not.

While we are giving away secrets ... not all retirement plans rely on the stock market Wink

Ah, well that's not too bad, especially in on Dunbine.

I was eBay watching some of this stuff for a few months, and I'm really curious as to who is paying these crazy prices. It really irritates me that anyone is willing to shell out 5x retail on used DVDs that aren't even that rare.

I think the thing that amazes me the most about the collection is that it was only started about two years ago. That's an incredible amount of anime in two years - and you've seen 1/3 of it? That's equally amazing... I have a large collection myself and probably haven't even seen a 1/3 of it and I've been collecting since 2002 or thereabouts.

And yes, I also agree with whomever said the bit about one's SO tolerating their hobby. It's always been a sticking point with me, but it must be awesome to have someone to share your anime with. Some of my friends like anime but its so hard to get them to watch anything that they have not already seen. Such as one female friend likes Sailor Moon but good luck getting her to watch ANYTHING else other than Sailor Moon... and has no interest in owning or watching anything else... and most people I've met are like this. I just don't understand it.

Say what? Individual store policy perhaps, but a law?
