Nice to see the hardcover version of DramaCon is out... in America. Pretty sure I ordered it from my local shop a while back. Hopefully it didn't get bumped or resolicited.

Saw it at my local comic shop. Already have all three paperbacks, so it'll have to wait until the stuff I re-ordered comes in.

I read the first volume of Dramacon and I couldn't get into it. The premise was fairly amusing, but the plotting too convenient. Whatshername's boyfriend was too perfectly evil, and whatshisname was too much of a fangirl wet dream(even down to being "damaged"). When so much of the volume was so shallow, I can't really call it good.

I remember flipping through the omnibus volume in Borders a few weeks ago, but I seriously don't remember seeing a "bonus chapter." I do remember seeing that all the bonus materials from the three volume release were in the new one with some additional artwork at the back, but I'm wondering what this bonus chapter supposedly is. It's newly drawn? Hm, maybe I just missed it?

Yes, it's spoiler[Matt and Christie's "first date"] and runs about 16 pages right after the end of Vol. 3. According to the author's note it's dated August 4 2008, so definitely newly drawn.

Forget McCain and Obama. I'm voting for Bandit Keith! Laughing
I've never really been that big on the OEL manga, but Dramacon is pretty well done. The only other one that I can think of thats also really good is Pantheon High. Of course that just might be cause of my love for mythology.

How... did I miss this? *sigh* Why can't I just join the throngs of cheapskates who read manga volumes in the bookstore and then leave them there? I always feel so guilty if I do more than skim manga before making a decision to buy. I was confident I wasn't going to miss anything by not even considering the new omnibus and now I have to decide if it is actually worth it to replace the three worn copies of the individual mangas and get it, or just trample on my ethics and go to Borders tomorrow and read the bonus chapter there.

...for the record, Dramacon is not manga...it IS a comic...and there is absolutely nothing wrong with that!! Her vilification of those who say so is pretty much what made me hate her with a passion. This scene made her seem pretty ignorant. Dramacon was one of the first and only manga-style comics I've read, and fairly quickly made sure it would be the last. *edit* Actually, never mind that, I own "Sorcerers and Secretaries", and I highly recommend it. It's sweet, romantic and funny, and I related to it well. Because this author could, you know, create characters that had some depth to them. Something Svet has issues with...*end edit*

On that note, I really want to ask a question to those who follow the "OEL" scene - why would you read a comic in manga-style when you could just read manga? I really can't wrap my head around this. I can kind of see why a North American would want to read about American anime conventions (That was my reason for picking up Dramacon *edit* Reason I bought Sorcerers and Secretaries - AMWF. Look it up. *end edit*), but why read an "OEL" about something more universal, where there is surely a manga about the same topic? This may seem stuck-up, but why??

I haven't read volume three, but I kind of don't want to after I've been "forced to" (read: it's in Yen Plus, so I read it just because it's there. And I read it last.) read Night School. It's kinda crap for me...and not because it is a comic! Just because the story is really going nowhere, and her art is really poor IMO. If her afterwords are any indication, she puts a lot of work into it, but it still looks cheap to my eyes. It's kind of a bad sign if I read her afterwords before her actual comic too...*sigh* At least it's better than Sumomomo Momomo...

Well, you're rather sharply and artificially separating "real" manga and "OEL" by implying that only OEL that does something manga doesn't could possibly be worth reading. I don’t believe it’s ever happened, but why would it be improbable that an OEL would treat a universal subject in an excellent way?

That said, I’m always been rather skeptical of Western artists who imitate the stereotypical manga-anime style. It tends not to look very good. I’m seen some very few handsome stand-alone art pieces, but never a comic that actually looked good*. It all strikes me a bit as shallow aping rather than legitimate inspiration.

And WOO! What dreadful strawmanning described in that link you posted! I'm really glad I gave up after the first volume!

*EDIT: Oh, wait, does Dan Kim count?

Well, that brings up another point. Kim is influenced by by Japanese pop culture (he's apparently into Touhou these days), but his drawings don't look quite like anything I've ever seen out of Japan, and more importantly, his comics are better conceived than "gee, I like Japanese pop culture".

Much as I love Dramacon, that scene is pretty bad. Mind I started out with vol. 2, so actually bothering to track down vol. 1 and wait for vol. 3 after that was a minor miracle. It probably helped that Svetlana was a lot friendlier about addressing haters in online forums.

ANN just put up a link to a Wendy Pini interview. But many anime fans aren't familiar with her because she's old-skool and doesn't draw doe-eyed panty-flash moe characters. Laughing

Nice YGOTAS reference =)

But anyways, I can't really agree much on what you said about Fate/stay night. I'm really going to sound like a type-moon fanboy here, but FSN has about one of the most unique storyline/premises ever. I'd find it perfectly agreeable if you were attacking the novel for flaws like poor pacing, unfaithful adaptation, ugly art, confusing presentation, etc. But the core story behind fate/stay night is definitely not "Ordinary High School Boy Discovers Amazing Supernatural Powers" by any stretch of the imagination. To make parallels between FSN and pokemon simply shows that you're unaware of the amazing plot and character depth the original visual novel had, and this is something that is applied to all three paths, albeit probably to a lesser degree with the 'fate'.

Meh, I guess it's one person's opinion against another's.

The good thing about Fate/Stay Night: it moves fast. Crazy fast. Shirou is not the kind of character to waste his time showing us boring things like school and home life;

Hah, its exactly the opposite that I really hated about the FSN anime. I feel like I wasted my life watching them sit around for 10 hours talking and explaining about things I couldn't care less about only to lead into the littlest bit of action and back to sitting around again.
Maybe I'll give the manga a flip through just to see what its like.

Reading Carlo's review of Mao Chan, I am going to guess that his never read Negima, since he would never make the crack about Akamatsu only being able to write spineless males, since Negi is anything but spineless.
