This show seems good, but, at least in the early episodes, the animation is rather uneven, with very sloppy CGI and sometimes jarring camera work. Definately not their best CGI/2D hybred. That, and the TV editing made it hard to follow, since it caused skips now and then.

Maybe the uncut DVDs would be better for that issue.

I've also read ahead in the manga, and I think The Second Stage might be better handled that The First Stage.

I still don't get it why everyone associates Gonzo's name with quality instead of quantity. It's not like they are Production I.G. or Ghibli. Just because they churn out too many shows each season doesn't automatically make them a fan favorite studio...

I like Gonzo because they churn out pretty stuff. Compare, say, Gonzo to Studio Pierrot, and you can automatically see the difference. Sure, they're not Ghibli, but this doesn't mean people can't admire them for their art and animation. I know I do.

Exactly. I mean, not everything they do is a winner (from what I've seen, GANTZ's 2-D & 3-D tend to clash, and Hellsing's cel animation got outright bad at times), but they produce many more hits than they do misses. Last EXILE & Full Metal Panic! were visually stunning, and the likes of Peacemaker Kurogane, Chrno Crusade, Gatekeepers 21, Kiddy Grade, Samurai 7, etc. haven't been half bad, either.

they picked a bad time to make an anime of this show, i mean the manga's just barely getting off the ground. i predict a really disappoting end.

The ending was great. If you don't know, the full name of the anime is "GANTZ: ~the first stage~" so there'll obviously be a "second stage" which will have the remainder of the story. But the last episode of the first season ended perfectly, in relation to the overall events of the manga.

The manga, I believe is on its seventh volume. Yeah, Gonzo's pretty much hit or miss. From what I've seen, Last EXILE wasn't that impressive of a blend. I haven't seen much, but that fully CG hanger looked pretty bad with the characters standing around. The 2-d art was pretty good, but the CG kind of marred things. Animation aside, there's still haven't been many titles from them I've really liked, with the exception of FMP and maybe Vandread. Gantz isn't bad, I like the concept, didn't like the camera work, liked the 2-d art, and thought the CGI was amertuerish. I'll definately have to see more before I really know what to think about this show.

Volume 13 is out (http://www.amazon.co.jp/exec/obidos/ASIN/4088766083/qid%3D1088018548/250-5429722-0833830), with volume 14 supposedly being released July 16th. Superior to the anime, but also heavier on the fanservice. This manga gets weekly updates, so there may be enough material for a 3rd stage even.

FMP and Last Exile were the two exceptions I had in mind Smile
