I want to see Noir be made into live-action movie(s). The anime I consider the true heir of Nikita and Leon. With Parisian settings, European-themed music, and the dark, film-noir story, Noir is the perfect candidate to it.
My cast.
Kirika: Audrey Tatou
Mireille: Scarlett Johansson
Altena: Cate Blanchett
Chloe: Chiaki Kuriyama
Director: Luc Besson
It will be a hit at the box office. A REAL hit. |

One of the first things people know about me is that I watch anime and play card games based off these anime, namely Naruto, Bleach, Dragon Ball Z, and previously Inuyasha. And then I add that I write for a magazine on these said card games (as a job). Usually works fine.
You'll usually see me on an off day wearing an anime based shirt, mainly because that's how I normally dress and any other way wouldn't be me. But of course, at work as a teacher, I'm in my standard button-down shirt/slacks/tie. There's a place for everything. Including Bleach/DBZ/Inuyasha wallscrolls on my wall and DBZ/Naruto/Bleach/IY playmats as my mousepad/desktop [in the classroom, that is]. My students know I watch anime, and for some, that's a good thing because they're into it as well. For others they don't really care, and that's fine as well. They can make fun of me all they want, but they still have to listen because I'm the teacher. And they know I'm still a kid inside, so why hide it when it is true?
It's what I do in my free time, and people that don't respect me have no reason being my friend. Many of my friends don't like anime, and that's just fine. Not all of our interests coincide, that makes people unique. But it's what I do, and I'd rather have true friends than ones that are friends with the fake me.
But of course, be smart about it, just like everything. You won't see me using anime references in class too often. Just like any hobby, time and place for everything. Just use your own judgment. |

It all ties into the whole "cartoons are for kids"/"anime is all Pokémon or porn"/"anime is nerdy and repels women" thing. Upon looking through a thread of a recent Shelf Life column, I came across someone who mentioned something about forced garage sales and one party in the relationship leaving just because of anime fandom.
As for me, I'm way too wrapped up in anime to even bother dating. (I already watch up to 20 or more shows at once, and over the past year I've averaged about 15 animes a month, so why date women?) |
See, that's another thing I don't get - the nagging wife who makes her husband give up his collection/hobby. And it's not just the anime, some shrew of a woman might be after a guy to give up anything that he enjoys that she doesn't - toy cars, video games, Star Wars figures, train sets, whatever it is that guys like to collect.
I was always of the opinion that when you're with someone, you accept them, quirks and all. And if you're getting married, well, all the more so, since you've made a vow in front of everyone.
Which again is the reason why it makes no sense to me that someone wouldn't mention a hobby like anime to a potential girlfriend/boyfriend. I'd rather them know right off the bat, so that if they're going to be a jerk about my hobby, then I can make a clean break, with little to no hard feelings. But if you don't tell them right away, well, they're going to find out eventually, and it may be after you've developed real feelings for them, and you may have the difficult choice of having to give up something you love - the collection, or the girlfriend/boyfriend. And if you give up the hobby, well, you might resent them for forcing you to do so, and that is definitely not good for a relationship.
Also, why date women? You might be lucky and find someone who would enjoy watching all that anime with you. Not all of us ladies hate nerdy hobbies - some of us actually manage to be nerdier than our boyfriends |

Nice to see Monster mentioned as a film that can make the transition to live-action.
My one concern is how Hollywood would treat the role of Dr. Kenzo Tenma. Would they "white-wash" it or cast an Asian-American actor? Personally, I'd love for it to be the latter. How many Hollywood films out there have an Asian lead that isn't performing some kind of martial art? I'm certain there are scores of unknown actors who could take on the Kenzo Tenma role. Plus, if producers are worried about "bankable names", they have a wide breath of other characters to play with (i.e., Johan, Anna/Nina, Inspector Lunge). Of course, this is me assuming that Hollywood would treat the material with kind of respect it deserves.
Now, another anime franchise I believe could transition nicely to live-action and hasn't been mentioned is Patlabor. I mean, think about it. A live-action Patlabor film that takes place in NYC with Kanuka Clancy as the main character. I think it could work and be a fun flick. |

Exactly!
I never really understood some of the posts about hiding your fandom to such extremes. I mean, if you talk to someone about liking anime and they think strangely of you then that person wasn't worth talking to in the first place.
If it ever comes up in conversation, I'll mention it. As someone else said, most people already talk about what interests themselves, interests you might not like, so why can't you do the same? (I hope that made sense...) |

| Huh. I hide my anime fannishness, but not because the people around me dislike it, rather because the majority of them are obsessed with it. I have a ton of interests, but if I mention that I watch anime or read manga, they won't talk to me about anything else. I'd much rather read a regular book or a BD or an American comic book around them, so that they stop pestering me with which shows are 'teh best' and other such nonsense. |

I've never been a closet fan... I was probably the first person at my high school who was really into anime way back in the mid-nineties. I embrace my eccentric nerdy ways.
****************
Every time I think of a title that'd make a good Hollywood movie I remember that there's already a dorama of that title.
I think the backstory of Berserk would make for a great movie. I'd imagine some of it would have to be tamed for a movie though. I'd just hope that The Rock wouldn't end up playing Guts.
Fantastic Children would make a STELLAR movie if you could find that many kids who can act exceptionally well.
OAVs have the potential to make good movies. Please Save My Earth could be easily handled and it could speak to a wide audience imho. Of course, there'd have to be a more fleshed out ending than the anime, the manga was a great deal longer afterall. Arslan Senki is a great warfare series that'd also translate well. Hell, even Juuni Kokki would make a great movie - war and politics, what's not to love. (I have a feeling that beast-men wouldn't make into the movie if it would be aimed at an older audience though).
Hey, how about a 4 hour trippy cgi Gankutsuou movie!? I'm game, no other movie version of Monte Cristo is worth crap anyhow. |

I think "Kiki's Delivery Service" would be a great choice for adaptation as an American film. It's a classic anime movie with a timeless, charming story. The special effects would be easy to translate on screen, too. "Kiki" would appeal to viewers of all ages.
Dream Cast:
Amanda Breslin ("Little Miss Sunshine") as Kiki
Freddie Highmore (from "August Rush") as Tombo
Liv Tyler as Kiki's mom
Robin Williams as the Voice of Jiji*
*(Hopefully, Jiji would be a real kitty, not CGI or a talking plushie...I still cringe when I think about Luna in "Pretty Guardian Sailormoon")
Of course, to ensure that the mood was perfect for the screen transition, my pick for dream director would be Tim Burton! |

Where I work, there are many anime fans, so it's no biggie.
People there are smart, play sports, listen to and even create all kinds of music, etc. So it's just one of many hobbies. Nevertheless, we're not the type to show off.**
My cousins are into it too, so our families know about it but aren't concerned. We're socially well-adjusted, smart, play sports, other hobbies - and they have their own hobbies. Sometimes, they watch it with us if it's something that looks interesting to them.
[** Although once I got my whole non-anime-liking dorm hall into Ranma 1/2 without even trying. Some just happened to wander in while I was watching it, then they told the rest, then the next thing I knew, they were borrowing my videos and playing my CDs loudly across the dorm.
Other than that, not much, despite being the PR guy of the univ's anime club in charge of "getting the word out" to the masses, ironically. ]
Now, about anime to American film, how about...... Witchblade?................. Oh, wait...... |

This made me feel so sad. I could never do something like that, hiding my something that is such a big part of my life from the person that I decide to spend the rest of my life with. There shouldn't be any secrets in love. |

From American comic book to TV Show to anime to movie? Crazy. (You do know it's based on a comic book, right? Just checking.)
I agree with the others saying Cowboy Bebop. It seems like it would survive the transition well. |

I've taken enough ribbing from family members; I don't need to subject myself to any more unnecessarily. While I still hold a bit of hope that I might be able to introduce a few of my family members to the reasons why I love this medium, until that day comes, I'm content with doing my anime-watching behind closed doors. |
Here's a way to get them to understand: Show them Cowboy Bebop or any of Hayao Miyazaki's films. If they still don't understand, I don't know what'll work. |
