Running a ship takes a lot of money. Tell me, if they're going to go the One Piece route and not have the pirates be actual pirates, how do they get money to run the ship? To pay wages? To buy ammo? To buy food? Even Cowboy Bebop had the crew catch the occasional criminal.

Except these privateers actually have to kidnap people and hold them, their ships and their cargo for ransom. How a teenage girl is going to give out orders which involve pointing guns at civilians and taking their stuff and still be seen as a heroine I do wonder. I really do.

captain harlock and one piece and giants in the anime industry, and handle the problem just fine, is there any reason why this show might not be able to replicate that. after all you have all ready said the show is well made. if so then why would the writers not have already thought of that problem.

What problem? The story already stated clearly that heirs to the captain are needed to inherit the ship and the marque. Next is to learn what sort of deeds the crew of the Benten Maru have been doing and why. After that is us learning what sort of captain the main character will be. If the intent is to make the main character out to be the heroine then all that is needed is adversaries who are "wrong" and for her to fight the good fight.

Which just means wait until the next couple of episodes to unravel the story.

You're really taking this story way too seriously.

RyanSaotome, I'm not taking it too seriously. It's a legitimate question. Are the pirates going to be patriots and fight in a war against their government's enemy, or are they going to be thugs and kidnap the space equivalent of old British couples? Or are they going to go a third route and have something like K-ON! or One Piece in space with lots of fluff? Or go a fourth route and have them fight against their own government, in which case this isn't so much a story about pirates as about separatists or pro-democracy demonstrators?

Wondering about how the show will proceed is perfectly reasonable.

Wondering about how the writers will address things like what these people actually do for a living and where they get vast sums of money from to run a warship is perfectly reasonable.

Wondering why the good but not great first episode got a perfect five from Zac is perfectly reasonable.

How 'bout you be reasonable too?

First episode has already aired as of thirty-four hours or so ago.

Okay, so Moretsu Pirates is well made. But the biggest problem is that it's a show about pirates. Or, by the sound of it, privateers, but that's just a fancy word. And that's a pretty bad problem, because pirates is not just in the premise but in the show's goddamn name.

The biggest hurdle is what these privateers are going to do. If they're going to actually rob freighters and attack civilian space stations and kidnap people then the show will be awful. That's because no matter how cute you make your lead female, if she's no better than a common thug yet made out to be the heroine then that kills the show's credibility. And if she doesn't do anything of any note but enters ship races and drinks tea then that's almost as worse.

So yeah, at this stage I'm going to keep watching for another two episodes because as others have said there is potential here. If she's going to be an actual pirate rather than a true privateer, or if this is going to be fluff, then I'll drop it so fast it will break the sound barrier before hitting the ground. But if she preys on actual pirates or fights in a new war then I'll keep with it. I just hope she doesn't somehow win the war on her lonesome, or lead the fleet that does it. Because that would be so yawn.

Well, there is the human trafficking and smuggling and extortion that usually followed the end of wartime, when these privateers needed something to do in order to maintain their lifestyles. So Yeah. But they lost their letters of marque very soon upon resuming this kind of activity and were labeled outlaws in the eyes of pretty much everybody.

But that was real life.

I'm guessing that Moretsu Pirates get to keep their letters in return for doing a lot of random crap jobs in outer space. The dirty work the military/government doesn't want to be bothered with. They have to keep the comedic atmosphere of the show going in some way, so that seems as good a way as any. We'll just have to see. I'm hoping it will stay action oriented and comedic.

The Crunchyroll page for this show has an image for a character who looks like a big badass alien. That angle might factor in somehow.

It got a 5 from me because I liked it a lot and thought it had a lot of potential. I don't treat 5s like they're some holy gift from the divine to only be bestowed on the truly perfect and flawless, I give 5s to the stuff I think is probably the best stuff I've seen during the preview guide. I'm not stingy - if I really liked the episode, it gets a 5. What the hell is the rating there for if you don't give it to the stuff that impressed you the most? It's just a number, anyway. What matters are the words that come after the number.

Everyone on staff is free to use the rating system how they like, within reason. Most everyone else is much stingier than I am when it comes to giving out 5s. And that's totally fine.

Also, all those questions you're asking matter way, way less to me than "is this story functional and fun to watch and does it have any depth to it". The answer, in the first episode, to that at least is "yes, yes, and it totally could if the writing holds up".

5 means "hey this is really cool and seems like it has a lot of potential!" not "THIS FLAWLESS MASTERPIECE THAT I'VE ONLY SEEN ONE EPISODE OF WILL BE REMEMBERED BY THE AGES".

Yikes, I should go to bed.

Monatsu Pirates is giving me the same vibe as SoraKake. Which is a nice vibe to get.

That's not how I was applying those questions. I wasn't using them to judge the episode but rather judge the future direction and potential of the show.

As to the episode: is the story functional? Yes. Was the episode fun? Kind of; suspension of disbelief was groaning loudly but never quite broke. Did the episode have depth? Remains to be seen, but right now seems like nothing more than polished Otaku bait wish-fulfilment.

Other shows have focused on paramilitary organisations. SMS in Macross Frontier (whose first episode blows this one out of the water, so to speak), and Mithril in Full Metal Panic!. The latter even had a teenage girl in charge of the main vessel. The difference is, neither SMS or Mithril were pirates. When a show's title is Moretsu Pirates, and features a teenage girl - who knows nothing about commanding anyone and whose previous job experience is working in a maid cafe - leading a bunch of misfits with a government-sanctioned license to point guns at civilians and steal their stuff, I do worry. It would be stupid not to.

Zac gave Moretsu Pirates a 5/5! Shocked

I truly am shocked. Now I have a better idea of what to expect when I watch the show next Saturday (I'm a free user on CR currently, unfortunately.).

People were expecting this not to be all that good from the name, what it looked like, and the description on the charts.

Well, High School Double-D has already given me one of my favourite lines of 2012: "If you were going to kill me you could have at least let me fondle your breasts first!" Laughing

I enjoy the space pirate show. Is it the best of the season so far? I do not know that, but it has been the best show I have seen out of the four so far that I have watched.

It is good to know that someone else has a similar view in regards to Recorder and Randsell. I found it okay, but it is a nice little time killer between shows or between doing other things.

Maybe my tastes are changing, but boy did I dislike High School DxD with a passion. I give the male lead credit for being straight forth about what he wants but boy did I hate him. I liked the fanservice but everything I just could not stand at all.

Okay, Booty Pirates: Best anime of the winter season. I'm calling it here. This is the sci-fi anime I've been looking for. And it looks great, the CG is a bit sloppy, but the character designs are great (although I'm getting a total Mai Hime vibe from the lead's hair). Interesting to hear that it shares a director with Nadesico. I rather enjoy that show as well, so I'm running really high on it now. And as for the complains about realism, one only has to look at the career of one Sir Francis Drake. Basically, privateers, which is what these pirates really are, serve as irregulars in the main navy, and when not on mission from the government were given free hand to loot and plunder the enemy at will. I see no reason why this premise can not work here, and a lot of the charm of the show will be seeing how this girl deals with the looting and plundering parts of the job.

ALSO: I saw nowhere were it claimed that it was peacetime. Yes, the war of independence started a hundred years ago, but wars have lasted for longer than that.

PLUS: Some ...ah ...haters... are being far too literal with the concept of Pirates. Pirates are always been portrayed as romantic in fiction, from Long John Silver to the modern Pirates of the Caribbean franchise. This is a romanticized story, and I won't fault it for that.

Nisemonogatari, on the other hand, was not as good. It had it's moments, but it seemed aimless. Compare it to the first episode of Bakemonogatari, and you can see how much weaker it is. It has potential, but to much time was wasted on reintroducing the Arararagi (sorry, I stuttered) harem and not enough on any real plot development. But SHAFT has got the visuals back, and as long as Shinbo-sensei is at the helm, I won't give into despair. But it still feels rusty, compared to it's predecessor.

/American's first great naval officer was a pirate, and he ended up working for the Russians as a mercenary. So there.

Jeezus, Zac's infamous 5 is really a potent explosive. The Space Pirate debacle might go down in history.

I don't see why people should make so many predictions and/or assumptions about a series that just aired a mere 20 minute pilot. Yeah, I get that for some a 5 might be hard to swallow but Zac explained himself and what his 5 entails. The show had a lot of goodwill.

I don't see why everyone should look at it through the microscope and dissect it into atoms. Flame war is pretty much tantamount to spamming.

Just wait for the second episode to come out and then we'll see if its good enough or not. Of course if you guys are having fun with all this bickering then I'll keep quiet, but really now, lets just call a truce and be patient.
