Wow, Theron has kept an incredibly open mind about Symphogear. Color me surprised.

And Zac didn't. Color me even less surprised.

If people want porn then they should watch porn. At least porn is honest, and the reasons why people view porn are honest.

These horrible Ecchi-Harem shows are abominations. Well, mostly. There are always exceptions to the rule, but that just mean there is a rule in the first place. The shows are often so horribly written with clichés and tropes that are so old and beaten they died of Alzheimer's and internal bleeding. They often have the thinnest veneer of a plot you can imagine, the girls are all one-note characters, the guy is a milquetoast loser practically by law, the animation and art is rarely better than adequate, and the shows are usually just a progression from the beach to the hot-springs to the maid-cafe to the school festival to the shrine festival with the fireworks . . . it pisses me off. And the girls compare breast sizes every five minutes and are all horrible cooks except for the one who isn't who may or may not be the childhood friend, and there's always a rich girl, always a childhood friend, always a sporty one and a glasses-wearing one and possibly a nympho one too. And the only other male character besides said loser is the perverted best friend who constantly puts the main characters in a headlock and asks him what he got up to in the weekend while living with five girls, and the main character will always reply "nothing". Which is true, because he doesn't have any balls and is shy around girls, even though his hormones should be raging and should be accepting the offers from all of these beautiful girls who are throwing themselves at him and wanting sex and he should be having threesomes every other night, with Saturdays being a full-on orgy. Oh, but that never happens, because he's often so much of a loser he can't bear to do the normal teenage male reaction. Let us not forget that these beautiful girls are throwing themselves at such a loser in the first place . . .

Sigh. Ecchi-Harem shows are the pits, the dregs of Anime. They're so predictable I could write the next one and probably make a comfortable living from doing so. Just make sure that everything on the checklist has been included, make sure all of the weird shiny spots on the girls' cleavages have been properly polished, and sail into the sunset with a severed hea- oh wait that's a different show.

I posted this in the Spotlight thread a couple days ago, but never got an answer, so I might as well ask here too.

When may we expect the Spotlight for Bodacious Space Pirates?
It starts tomorrow, so I'm rather curious about this.

I do, actually which is how I picked up on the obvious pattern of fanservice/moe shows always getting lower ratings, the abundance of fanservice/moe often being cited as the main reason to avoid it.

I can't say I recall a review that's ever said to check out a show for it's attractive female characters. Correct me if I'm wrong.

The funny thing about that is that any character who would do something to that effect would be seen as pure scum. Look at School Days. Not screwing every girl who shows interest in you is far more admirable if you ask me.

animenewsnetwork.com/review/queen-blade-2/the-evil-eye-series/dvd-part-2

"The visuals and soundtrack remain the highlights of the series. ARMS knows how to draw attractive women and make nudity of sufficient quality to entice in most any fan service devotee"

Honestly, there are probably dozens of examples from Theron, as he's pretty much one ANN who will come out and say "I love fanservice as long as it's done well," but I think I've seen other reviewers make comments along the lines of "lot's of nudity for those who like it."

And I'll bet you don't watch any of them. So A) What do you even know, and B) What do you even care?

Seriously.

(also, here is a shocking revelation for you, people who watch "fanservice" shows very frequently...also watch porn ZOMG I KNOW HOW COULD THAT BE!11!!!???//?!?)

Seriously, why are you so upset about this?

Of course not, since anime is SRSBSNS only.

And it is most CERTAINLY not for appreciating an attractive female character.

(here's a fun exercise, try predicting Zac's reviews based on the percentage of lead roles held by females...)

There's more to life than attractive females (although don't get me wrong, they are very, very nice), but more importantly, there's more to making a good Anime than just putting in attractive female characters. Or attractive male characters, since there's a large proportion of fans who want something like Brave10 or whatever the heck is coming.

You see Vaisaga, good shows can have non-stunning females (like the beautiful MILF Yukari Nitani in Usagi Drop), while bad shows can have absolutely gorgeous female characters (such as Inori and Guilty Crown). Beautiful characters don't have much of a bearing on the show's quality at all. Except to say, the more-fanservice-laden the show, the worse it generally is, since bad shows tend to rely on their females to sell the show with their bodies and faces instead of the show appealing to people through things like story and writing and character development.

So to sum up, how attractive the females are should be resigned to a side note if put in the preview or review at all.

Given that the Idolmaster had like 18 female leads and got a good score from him, good luck.

@Mad_Scientist

I don't think Zac was suitably drunk when he wrote that preview.

I sort of appreciate Symphogear, though it has many of the problems of giant robot shows. (spoiler["Oh, look, people being killed, no big deal, just save those who are left, and OMG NAMED CHARACTER!!! Time to sacrifice everything!"] or spoiler["Just as we thought, these conventional weapons don't affect this enemy we've been fighting for at least two years, but we in the army are still out here using them for some reason"]) The attack names give it that retro comic book feel for me.

Usagi Drop uses cute female character too. If the girl lead is fat and ugly, people would probably no watch it.

for live action movie or anime, i would rather watch beautiful people over the ugly one. it's good for you that you would rather have ugly leads. too me, the story loses alot of points if the leads are not good looking.

I know that I've read reviews by Theron Martin that cite something like 'girls to ogle' as a virtue, although he tends to also mention on other things, like story, characterization and ideas.

You're actually trying that rhetorical trick? Totally lame.

Is that the factor I'm missing? Well, then in that case, based on his twitter I predict Highschool DxD score won't be an actual number.
