I have no idea to what degree, but it seems like stealing makes Crunchyroll users a "community". Their forums are filled with panic "If I don't get piracy of everything, I don't stay" posts. They are all basically planning to stop using the site Jan 8, whether they like the content or not. Very mature. I really hate that. Again, I have to ask how far will Viz/TV Tokyo let these people push them before calling it quits?

Holy shit. I don't like Naruto at all, but if the price point is anything like people above are talking about (around $10 a month) I'd buy it anyway just so this idea flourishes.

I miss the days when fansubbers did series that weren't licensed and since you needed physical media (VHS) most distros would stop selling once a license was announced.

I'm glad that Hulu and Joost will be getting the free streamed episodes at the same time as CR so that I won't need to use their service. Paying for streaming is not what I want to do, I'll pay for DVDs but not streaming, plus I still don't much care for CR. So yay Hulu!

Hm...I, too, wonder if you can download the episodes. I like to save my episodes onto DVDs to watch on my laptop when I'm not home, and I can't watch them this way if I don't have the internet where I am Sad

I don't wanna have to pay Crunchyroll just so I can watch some episodes. I'll wait a week.

I'm interested in seeing how this turns out. I hope one day we can move past this immature notion that "all anime should be 100% free and pumped directly into my bloodstream," but that's just a pipe dream.

As for Crunchyroll purging its pirated material, that has mixed implications. The site has helped me discover great shows like Ginga Hyouryuu Vifam that I wouldn't have seen otherwise. If an official release of that show were made available, DVD or otherwise, I would be among the first in line to support it, but sadly, there's not much hope for an early '80s anime series that's virtually unknown over here.

As much as I understand why anime companies want to protect their properties from piracy and don't want to take a risk by releasing something potentially unprofitable overseas, it is unfortunate that consumers are missing out on a lot of stuff.

It blows my mind that Crunchyroll has spent so much time stealing the work of both Broadcasters, Animation Studio and fansubbers and then demanding money for what was originally free and high quality - and then the sort of companies who would surely be against Piracy are now seeing it as the best platform for their work.

I guess it goes to show that no matter how dishonest and illegal you are, if you work hard enough even your enemies will respect you.

If Crunchyroll are willing to give all of their income and profit back to the people who actually deserve it, then okay. But in reality Crunchyroll is just the anime version of Ebaums World. It's disgusting.

Definitely an interesting move by TV Tokyo. The fans don't really have that much of an excuse to be complaining now. I won't be following this because I'm a dub watcher and I prefer to watch this on DVD rather than streaming, but I hope this works out well.

the only way this will work is if the quality doesn't suck. i can't imagine anyone paying for this if it's the same resolution as their Gonzo stuff.

Thank god it's only for Naruto, and not for a show anyone actually really cares about or anything.
