Just the other day I was in the Tezuka Museum in Takarazuka, and they have a screen-display that shows clips from animation tests of the movie. The clips were very rough-looking, and it had me worried (despite the `this is a work in progress` disclaimer attached to them). So now, after seeing this trailer... I think it actually looks pretty good. The 3D human characters capture Tezuka`s designs very well, though it remains to be seen how well-animated they`ll be. I liked the `underground digging` homage to the original series` opening. And I really don`t care if they`ll have Astro Boy shirtless or not - just as long as they won`t stick with the really lame shirt they gave him here...
Overall, I`m pleasently surprised. I was disappointed when I heard this project, that was previously supposed to be handled by Imageworks, ended up with the people who did the TMNT CGI movie and `Fly Me to the Moon`. But after this trailer, and knowing that there`s a talented director and capable screenwriter attached, I think there`s room for optimism here.

His eyes ought to be much bigger... but otherwise I like what I see!

I can't say I like the character designs for this. Looks too similar to Jimmy Neutron and the like.

Holy Crap that was cool. I can't wait. In terms of animation it already looks better than TMNT though I'm not sure I'd put on Pixar level. The music sounded great. I hope that's going to be what the final score sounds like. I also hope that unlike TMNT this movie won't be littered with licensed music. That and the excessive dialogue were my two biggest complaints with TMNT but I sure Imagi has taken note of that since this is only their second film.

So I sent Fred Schodt the link, and he said the following:

I really appreciate your sending me this. I've
been rather fearful of what Imagi would turn out. The
trailer looks pretty nice, though. Thanks much!

I'm working with a friend on translating the *Pluto* manga,
by Naoki Urasawa. Viz will release it in February, I
think. If you like the Astro Boy stories, you'll love it.
The whole series is based on the Astro Boy manga episode,
The Greatest Robot on Earth.

Call him "2002 boy". I've seen better cutscenes in videogames circa that time.

C'mon, what ever happened to "the story is paramount"? Laughing

Yet some people complained what they think Pixar putting CG animation first before story. Or should we all critique how "limited animation" anime films are? Razz

People are so spoiled by Pixar. I can't wait till we trash the first Japanese-made CG film, which would certainly not be at Pixar's level and experience. (I dunno if I'd include FF: Spirits Within since that was made in Hawaii.)

I still wonder if he'll have a machine gun in his butt like the original did.

Okay, some of you are just nitpicking in silly ways. He should look more innocent? Should have bigger eyes? Come on, that's just nitpicking for nitpicking's sake. What next? "They should call him Tetsuwan Atom!!!" ??

Guys keep in mind this is an adaptation, and like all adaptations there will be differences, both in the story and the visuals. If they were setting out to make a carbon copy of the original, why bother even making the movie? Like Mickey Mouse or Bugs Bunny, when a cartoon character is around for that long his appearance is bound to change over the years.

Happy now???

Good catch! I didn't think about that at all.

That's so cool! Awesome that he's working on Pluto, too.

Chiaki: If the budget's as reasonable as the one for TMNT, it can't flop.

Looks pretty cool to me!

I wish they would do more anime movies this way, instead of turning them into live action, which does not work for some films.

I felt like IMAGI did a fine job on TMNT, and this trailer looks rather promising. Reasonably high hopes for this one.
