I was going to pass this by simply because the story was just so common, but I hadn't realized it was by the author of Masca, a title I really looked forward to getting a second volume - and more. I definitely will pick this up, the art promises to be gorgeous.

ok, they shouldnt have published this in america.
I don't know to what extent copyright laws go but Disney doesnt take likely to derivatives.

Why not? Disney adapted the original story anyway, so it's not like they completely own it.

This is Hans Christian Andersen not a Disney orignal. But Disney likes to think that just because they borrow they think they own it. The Danish gov't would have a problem with Disney extending itself here.

Shocked I'm going to assume the post about copyright laws intends to be sarcastic.

As for the manga review itself, I'm surprised at the (relatively) high grade given for story if the story's nothing special (or is it a nothing-special-but-done-well story?). I'm debating whether or not I want to check this out -- I do love a good shoujo manga -- but as much as I appreciate pretty art, there needs to be something underneath for me to take a chance.

I got this for my mermaid-obsessed friend, and read it myself. I really enoy it, although i am a complete sucker for gorgeous art. Yes, the story is derivative, but Fidelis is a fun character and really, this could go either way. We could have Evyione go with Fidelis, like in the Hans Christian Anderson story, or she could go with the Sea King, like in the Disney version. Or her creepy cousin, I guess.
There are also hints at political and court intrigue to come, which I love, and hope that she expands on it.

So yes, while the story is derivative, the characters are interesting, everyone is beautiful, and there will hopefully be political/court intrigue!
