Australian imports ho! I've imported some anime from Madman before, so I know the way.
Wait, what's this? Siren Visual? I'd never heard of them before; I thought Madman was the only Australian anime company. And they have Dennou Coil you say?! Dagnabbit, ANN, stop dividing news into NAmerican/UK/Australian categories. I want all the world's anime news in one feed. How can you not tell me something as important as Dennou Coil being released in English? Anyway, off I go to buy me some new anime

But this is good to know, I had been wondering how Madman's license of Gosick was going to be affected by Bandai's closure since as far as I can recall Madman don't release sub only series (or they might and I've just never noticed, none of my Madman DVDs are sub only at any rate).
You have a PC don't you? So may people seem to forget that thgey can play DVD's on ther computers. If you do find a region free BD player, let me know lol. I've been looking for one thats either region free by default or has an unlock code, but so far the only way to make a player region free that I've found is to pay to have it mod chipped, and that costs more than the bloody player itself... |

I'm not sure what the policy on links is, but I bought an Insignia NS-WBRDVD4 for $40 (it's up to $60, now) from Best Buy. It's easily made region selectable with a firmware update. You can set any region for both Blu-Rays and DVDs.
It's actually replaced my PS3 as my primary player, since playback is quite good, and it's much more quiet. |

I don't know about Madman's anime, but I bought pretty much all of their Godzilla DVDs as they were released, and they were quite cheap. |

You know those cool animations in the menu? Not in most Madman releases. Those cool extras? Mostly nonexistent. The Prices? About twice as high. But I can finally forgive since we get what you don't. I was so sad to find that Nichijo had been cancelled for release in America because if it doesn't come to America it probably won't come anywhere outside of Japan. Here's hoping that K-On!! and the K-On! Movie get released here too.

I keep forgetting that Madman/Siren have some licenses that are egregiously absent from the R1 catalog. I might have to look into how importing works at some point down the line.

Actually the animated menus and "cool extras" are mostly gone from the majority of North American releases. Most are pretty basic now outside of the occasional art box. Our prices have been slowly creeping back up too, though they are still cheaper. |

Kaiba, Dennou Coil, Tatami Galaxy, House of Five Leaves (a year before NISA will put out theirs), Trapeze/Welcome to Irabu's House, the rest of When They Cry, Usagi Drop, Perfect Blue (still in print), etc and that's just Siren Visual. AU doesn't get a ton of stuff but they seem to get a lot of the high quality non-shounen/non-porny titles that US companies don't seem to be interested in at all. Also, it's not all that expensive. I think $1 AU is like $1.05 USD or something ridiculously equal like that. Siren Visuals 13 episode sets are $50, come with a bonus disc with episodes from other series, and have a box that most non-NISA US companies would call premium. Yes, I was interested in the fun press release language that there was no change to their "release slate" ... oh, and BTW, the release would probably be subtitle only. AFAIU, Siren only picks up licenses directly from Japan, while Madman will either license from Japan or sublicense from an R1 distributor that had to get the "English Language Countries" rights.
I'll have said that phrase ~ not for Tatami Galaxu, but certainly for Dennou Coil. However, first either my income has to jump or the ozzie dollar has to slump. |

Siren used to be a little... "Shady" back in the day. Allegedly they would sell bootlegs, and their quality was kinda crap. On their release of X, for the first few volumes, they used white subtitles, which blended in with basically everything that wasn't black. Then they went silent... I think they had a change of ownership, and they suddenly came back with a vengeance, licensing all kinds of titles before Madman could get to them. What was interesting was that they did a lot of sub-only releases, fine with me (and most of Madman's customers too, based on the fact they show anime subtitled at conventions) since I rarely watch the dub. They've recently started quickly licensing and doing sub-only releases of new titles and releasing a dub version later, an interesting way to combat fansubbing. |
