Um, this wasn't the writers "trying" something different. The writer of this review IS aware that The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya is adapted from a series of light novels, right?

I'm fairly sure Michelle is aware that they were adapted from the light novels. What I think she meant by trying something new was in the presentation and characterisation itself. I mean, perhaps when you look at it purely from the story perspective, Kyon is acting more or less the same, but he was presented here with a lot more exageration.
