I love this series. Balsa has to be the best representation of a strong female in anime I've EVER seen. You just don't see a lot of characters like her.

And yes, Balsa is the best female lead I've ever seen.

Hmm.

Have you two test tube babies ever seen of Ghost in the Shell? More like...have you ever heard of it?

Cause I can pretty damn guarantee you...Balsa isn't a new kind of formula. And she's just a fraction of it at that...

Hm, Well the Major is quite a tough gal but she is still quite sexualized. Not that there's anything wrong with being sexy and strong but characters that are both sexy AND strong aren't exactly fresh. I mean there's Revy from Black Lagoon and Michiko from Michiko to Hatchin as examples.

However with Balsa... she was strong, had a weapon, was pretty, and yet there was no cleavage, booty shorts, crazy outfits, etc, in sight... that was the biggest breath of fresh air.

You just don't see that often. It's usually the guns with the boobs or the magic with the cutesy... but with Balsa... she's just a strong female spear warrior... and that's just good enough for me.

Strong females who aren't overly sexualized aren't exactly unheard of. Samus Aran NEVER takes off her armor until the end or near-end of the games in a lot of cases.

Fascinating. I knew Tanda would turn out to be one of the more interesting characters in this anime. =3

LOL, I was just about to mention that. SURE Samus isn't sexualized in lets say... Super Metroid but in Brawl... Zero Suit Samus. Let's just say the suit is quite tight and doesn't leave much about her figure to the imagination.

Also your example comes from a video game not an anime. It's EXTREMELY hard to find more girls who aren't half naked and wielding a weapon. Mostly the vixen types honestly. Balsa was nice for me.

On a side note, I've never seen so many references to Adult Swim's broadcast of a show in a review before. Was that a subtle (or not so subtle) hint to start watching the show? Razz

But Balsa is not only kickass, she is also gentle enough to inspire one to think, "I wish she were my mommy." She does it all, and exceedingly well.

Ok after looking over this review and seeing A's across the board, I immediately decided to give this show a look. I must say I regret allowing this one to escape my radar (because I assumed that it was going to be one of those boring feudal shows). Episodes 1-3 were enough to sell me. 'Balsa' kicks so much A$$ it's not funny. Every now and then I have to give a show a chance. To be honest the premise is one I'm familiar with. So that's a plus for me. This is definitely going in my collection very soon. I cannot wait to see more.

Yay, Balsa-love!

I was very intrigued by this series from my first glimpse of the trailer at an anime con.

It was not the action series I was expecting, but in many ways it was more beautiful and charming than the average action show.

The relationship between Balsa and Chagum was so well developed and compelling, I'd love to label it as the best depiction of a foster-parent and child relationship in anime, EVER! But I don't feel I have the authority to say that :p

I also compared Balsa to the Major at first. Balsa's stance against killing her enemies and her parental love for her charge makes her stand apart from most anime heroines as a strong and feminine personality whom all can respect, whereas the Major struggles to feel human (which is admirable in its own right), and she never has to practice to be physically strong, nor does she ever question her duties as a soldier, or hesitate to kill when necessary. I have to say that I love Balsa's passivism, which is unusual in any strong adult warrior character.

My only complaint about the show was how I perceived Tanda to be portrayed as Balsa's "feminine" counterpoint, like he had to be feminized for Balsa to seem more strong. But this may have just been my misinterpretation as a "weak point" of one of his many great characteristics, so correct me if you think I'm wrong!

I'm not sure what you mean. Tanda *is* in a way Balsa's feminine counterpart, but to me that made him seem pretty strong, eventhough he is not completely happy with the situation. Since he cared so much about Balsa, who was so wild and reckless he pretty consciously decided to be the person that would take care of her when she's wounded - as he does in the series as well. He even complains at one point, that he feels "like a wife of a soldier waiting for her husband's return" ... because he can't do anything else, but worry about and wait for her, and of course, she will always come back in a pretty bad shape. I think in his opinion he does even consider himself weak because of that. But to me, this was somehow impressing Wink

In that case, you may want to compare it to the mother/daughter relationship in Witchblade. Wink

I'm going to say I agree on the animation but disagree on everything else. I absolutely despise this show. It's boring, moves at a pace so slow snails can run circles around it, and in general, is just a painful chore to watch. This is the show that dooms Adult Swim, after they kept getting show after show after show in its vein, Bleach the sole exception.

It looks pretty at least. Perhaps they could afford to make such lush animation because nothing happens in it.

Didn't you hear? Witchblade has a scantily clad character so it's utter shite and drivel only worthy of those with half a brain, unlike great and mighty intellectual Moribito. [/sarcasm]

Obviously you don't like Moribito, but I don't understand the bitterness about Witchblade. ANN gave it pretty good marks, and Theron Martin (the guy who reviewed Moribito) did the majority of the reviews of that series. He rather liked it.

And I have no idea what you are talking about regarding Moribito dooming Adult Swim. It's one of their most recent animes, and what other series like this have they shown? Please don't tell me you think Code Geass is a show in the same vien as Moribito.

It wasn't directed at the reviewer, but the comments I've been hearing at the official Adult Swim message board. Witchblade was bashed from its inception to its run on IFC and called mindless trash, with those liking it having the intellects of clams and half the taste.

Moribito's ratings, by the way, have been horrific, even by Adult Swim standards. That's what I was talking about.
