Black Butler Creator Draws Tōken Ranbu Anthology Cover

posted on by Amanda Ellard

Yana Toboso, creator of the Black Butler manga, drew the front cover art of the new Tōken Ranbu anthology released on September 27.

Square Enix's monthly magazine G Fantasy tweeted about the book,

"The "Tōken Ranbu -ONLINE- Anthology Comic ~Sukueni no Jin~" anthology is on sale in Japan today. A splendid writing staff is gathered here now! Heartwarming, comedic, serious sword-men's various every day life: by all means seriously consider it!!"

Toboso also created bonus illustrations along with the anthology's cover. She tweeted artwork of just the Minamoto clan sword brothers Higekiri and Hizamaru from the original front cover piece.

The Basara manga's creator Yumi Tamura also contributed to the anthology.

Tōken Ranbu is a "sword personification training game" that takes famous swords from Japanese history and interprets them as bishōnen. Nitroplus designed the characters and scenario. The game launched in Japan last year, and it has more than 1.5 million registered users. The game has acquired a large female fanbase and inspired a wide range of merchandise, as well as several manga. The game will see two anime adaptations first this October and then next year.

Black Butler also has a new anime film adaptation Kuroshitsuji: Book of the Atlantic opening in Japanese theaters on January 21, 2017. The manga already inspired three television anime series and three original video anime (OVA) projects. The most recent OVA series, Black Butler: Book of Murder, premiered in two parts in Japanese theaters in October and November of 2014, respectively. Funimation released all three television anime, the Black Butler II OVA project, and the Black Butler: Book of Murder OVA on home video.
