Discotek Licenses Crusher Joe Anime Film, OVA Series

posted on by Crystalyn Hodgkins
Gundam: The Origin's Yoshikazu Yasuhiko directed 1983 film, Dirty Pair's Toshifumi Takizawa directed 2-episode OVA series

Discotek Media announced on Friday that it has licensed Crusher Joe: The Movie and Crusher Joe: The OVA's. The company plans to release the film in early 2017 on DVD. The company said it also plans to release the film on Blu-ray Disc "at some point in the future." Discotek Media didn't provide any information on the release of the OVA series, but said it would be a separate release from the film.

Both anime adapt Haruka Takachiho and Fujihiko Hosono's manga. AnimEigo previously released both anime on DVD in 2003, and it describes the story:

The galaxy is a strange and dangerous place, and there are times when even the United Space Force can't help. That's where the Crushers come in - skilled troubleshooters who will deal with any problem, large or small, for a fee (large only!) And there is no better Crusher than Crusher Joe!

Yoshikazu Yasuhiko (Gundam: The Origin creator) directed, wrote, and designed the characters for the film. Takachiko (Dirty Pair light novel series) himself wrote the film's scripts alongside Yasuhiko. The film originally opened in Japan in 1983.

Yasuhiko returned to design the characters for the two-episode OVA series in 1989, but the late Toshifumi Takizawa (Dirty Pair, Samurai 7) took over as director, and Fuyunori Gobu (Armored Trooper Votoms) wrote the scripts.
