Monster Strike The Movie Premieres with Limited-Time Only Prizes

posted on by Eric Stimson
Theaters packed, showings sold out

Monster Strike The Movie, the theatrical adaptation of the popular smartphone game Monster Strike, premiered on December 10. Fittingly, moviegoers are treated to free prizes that can be used in the game.

On opening weekend, moviegoers are given ten Oratama per day for use in the game; afterward, theaters will only give one per day. Moviegoers also get to play on Area Quest, a new stage featuring the movie character Genome. (Smartphone geo-location must be turned on.) Finally, they will get "fortune cards" featuring the popular character Oragon. There are seven different types, passed out at random, and each has a different fortune on the back.

Perhaps as a result of these prizes, movie theaters have been packed and showings sold out across Japan. "About 80% of the patrons are elementary and middle school-aged boys," said @daichi3180. "It's been a long time since I saw a movie with this slanted of an audience ^^;"

"The following showings are full"

The film tells a prequel story before the events of the net anime series. The protagonist, Ren Homura, returns to his hometown of Kaminohara, but something in his memories tells him he didn't really live in Kaminohara before. After the Monster Strike app is forcefully installed on his phone, the game and its battles start to help him piece together his scattered memories. Ren also uncovers the truth about the smartphone game. The game has 35 million players worldwide, while the net anime series has been viewed over 100 million times on YouTube.
