MAPPA Creates Promo Video for Atsushi Kamijou's Sex Manga

Yuri!!! on Ice's Sayo Yamamoto crosses paths with Kamijou again

Pioneering manga creator Atsushi Kamijou's late-80s manga Sex is getting a new "30th Anniversary Edition" re-release by Shogakukan. Serialized in Young Magazine from 1988 to 1992, Sex is often considered a groundbreaking work of manga, and has inspired many artists since. MAPPA (Rage of Bahamut Genesis, Terror in Resonance) is creating a promotional video for the 30th Anniversary Edition, with direction by Sayo Yamamoto of Michiko & Hatchin and Yuri!!! on Ice fame.

The second volume of the 30th Anniversary Edition, slated for May 26, will have more information on the promotional video, but getting your hands on it might be trickier. The re-release will have four volumes, with the first one already out since Saturday, the second volume slated for May 26, and the third and fourth volume's slated for July 26 and August 26. Fans need to mail in an application ticket on the first three volumes along with a postcard from the fourth volume

This isn't the first time that Yamamoto has worked with Kamijou. Their first official work together was the episode 20 of Space Dandy, which Yamamoto directed and storyboarded. The episode introduced a character named Johnny, who Kamijou designed. Yamamoto later directed the "Endless Night" ice-skating short in the Japan Animator Expo, for which Kamijou drew the character designs. Yamamoto's foray into an ice-skating story with "Endless Night" is likely what later gave rise to Yuri!!! on Ice.

Depending on who you ask, Kamijou's definitive work is either Sex or TO-Y. Both are stories about teen rebels that have resonated throughout the decades. TO-Y got an OAV in 1987, which current Answerman Justin Sevakis wrote about in great detail in his Buried Treasure column.
