Kadokawa Launches Historical Manga Series with Macross, Yuri on Ice Artists

posted on by Lynzee Loveridge

Publisher Kadokawa Shoten launched a new manga line on Wednesday to entice fans of popular creators to learn more about history. The non-fiction line is called Manga Jinbutsu-den (literally: Manga Biographies) and includes cover illustrations from Tadashi Hiramatsu (Yuri!!! on Ice), Haruhiko Mikimoto (Macross) and Kazuma Kaneko (Megami Tensei series).

The series launch kicked off with a biography about popular Sengoku-era personalities Oda Nobunaga illustrated by Kazuma Kaneko, Tokugawa Ieyasu illustrated by Tadashi Hiramatsu, and Sanada Yukimura illustrated by Haruhiko Mikoto.

Next month, the series will add biographies on Thomas Edison (art by Kino's Journey's Kouhaku Kuroboshi) and Helen Keller (art by Himawari!'s Okama). Books focusing on Florence Nightingale, Toyotomi Hideyoshi, Date Masamune, Saigo Takamori, Walt Disney, and Anne Frank are also planned for release.

The Manga Jinbutsu-den series targets children and is the second in Kadokawa Shoten's educational manga series after its Nihon no Rekishi (History of Japan) line launched in 2015. Nihon no Rekishi was very popular with Japanese readers and sold over three million copies.

Publisher Shueisha began re-releasing its Learning Japanese History Through Manga series last year with art by its popular creators like Tite Kubo, Masashi Kishimoto, Hirohiko Araki, and Sui Ishida.
