Shonen Jump Celebrates 50th Anniversary by Reprinting Landmark Issues

posted on by Lynzee Loveridge

Shueisha's Weekly Shonen Jump magazine is announcing all kinds of festivities to celebrate its 50th anniversary, including contests and a huge, three-part exhibition. Shueisha is adding an issue reprint campaign as well and the publisher will re-release some of the magazine's most iconic issues. These issues will be released in "packs" of two.

The first pack is a reprint of the magazine's first ever issue from 1968 and the combined #3-4 issue released in 1995. The first was chosen for obvious reasons, while the second was Shonen Jump's biggest circulated issue ever with a total of 6.53 million copies.

The inaugural issue of Weekly Shonen Jump contains just eight stories:

  • Kujira Daigo by Sachio Umemoto
  • Oobakare Apache by Fujio Akatsuka
  • Jigoku Ken by Yoshiteru Takano
  • Chichi no Tamashii by Hiroshi Kaizuka
  • Harenchi Gakuen by Go Nagai
  • Doru Yarō by Mikiya Mochizuki
  • Flash Gordon by Dan Barry
  • Te by Kazuo Umezu

In comparison, the 1995 issue has 22 stories, many that will be recognizable to anime and manga fans.

  • Slam Dunk by Takehiko Inoue (in color)
  • Shadow Lady by Masakazu Katsura
  • Mind Assassin by Hajime Kazu
  • Dragon Ball by Akira Toriyama
  • Midori no Makibao by Tsunomaru
  • Tottemo! Luckyman by Hiroshi Gamou
  • Rurouni Kenshin by Nobuhiro Watsuki
  • Bonbonza Kakō Kōen Gekibu by Yutaka Takahashi
  • Nanpo U Den by Haruto Umezawa
  • Jigoku Sensei Nube by Sho Makura and Takeshi Okano
  • JoJo's Bizarre Adventure by Hirohiko Araki
  • Captain Tsubasa: World Youth by Youichi Takahashi
  • Kochira Katsushika-ku Kamearikouen-mae Hashutsujo by Osamu Akimoto
  • Shin Jungle no Ouja Tāchan by Masaya Tokuhiro
  • Dragon Quest: Dai no Daibōken by Riku Sanjō, Kōji Inada and Yūji Horii
  • Kagemusha Tokugawa Ieyasu by Tetsuo Hara and Keiichirō Ryū
  • Ninku SECOND STAGE by Koji Kiriyama
  • RASH!! by Tsukasa Hojo
  • Rokudenashi Blues by Masanori Morita
  • BOY by Haruto Umezawa
  • Bakudan by Akira Miyashita
  • Ōsama Haroba: Hattari Teikoku no Gyakushū by Kokichi Naniwa

The first pack of issues will go on sale on July 15. The second pack will bundle the first and second week combined issue from 1987 and the 25th issue from 1997. Those issues contain the launch chapters of JoJo's Bizarre Adventure and One Piece. Both series are celebrating landmark anniversaries this year (30th and 20th, respectively). The third pack will focus on pivotal chapters. The 26th issue from 1986 contains the Fist of the North Star chapter where Raoh loses the fight to Kenshiro and the combined 21st and 22nd issue from 1991 contains the Dragon Ball chapter "Krillin no Kotoka?!"
