YouTuber Posts 2nd Video Claiming your name. 'Rips Off' Niji-Iro Hotaru

posted on by Jennifer Sherman

YouTube user Ms. Rachel posted a second video on Saturday that claims to show plagiarized scenes in Makoto Shinkai's your name. film. The video shows stills from Niji-Iro Hotaru ~Eien no Natsu Yasumi~ and The Girl Who Leapt Through Time in comparison to Shinkai's storyboards for his anime film.

The video credits director Kōnosuke Uda with storyboards for Niji-Iro Hotaru ~Eien no Natsu Yasumi~ and director Mamoru Hosoda with storyboards for The Girl Who Leapt Through Time. Ms. Rachel's video uses many images from the same scene that the previous "rip-off" video highlighted. However, some images comparing festival scenes are new to the second video. The video ends with an illustration of Shinkai.

It may be worth noting that that the video has received an overwhelmingly negative response on YouTube. As of the posting of this article, the video has 15,185 views with 32 "likes" and 135 "dislikes." Some online commenters are wondering if Shinkai will respond to the YouTuber's accusations, but many think the images in the video are insufficient to prove Shinkai truly plagiarized other works in his hit film.

Uda already commented about the first "rip-off" video on his official Twitter account. He acknowledged that the film probably drew some inspiration from his work. However, he said that Ms. Rachel may be taking some liberties with the outright label of plagiarism. Uda took the middle approach that if a work's direction sufficiently changes the content, then it can be called original.

Uda has not posted a Twitter response to the second video, and Hosoda has yet to publicly reply to either video.
