Game features 4th pilot-dependent weapon for Virtuaroids

Sega began streaming a promotional video for its Toaru Majutsu no Virtual-On (A Certain Magical Virtual-On) game for the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation Vita on Tuesday. The video reveals that the game will ship in Japan on February 15.

The PS4 version of the game will cost 7,990 yen (about US$72), and the PS Vita version will cost 6,990 yen (US$63). The limited-edition Discipline 55 version for PS4 will bundle the 500-page "Chronicle 20" book and the Cyber Troopers Vitual-on Official Sound Data 18 soundtrack CD for 12,490 yen (US$112). The limited-edition Toaru Majutsu no Archive (A Certain Magical Archive) version for PS Vita will bundle the "Toaru Majutsu no Virtual-On no Subete" booklet and a soundtrack CD for 10,990 yen (US$99). People who pre-order the game will receive the "A Certain Magical How to Play" beginner's introduction booklet.

Sega revealed character visuals and new features for the game in August.

Tōma Kamijō (MBV-707-G/VSL Temujin)

Index (IDX-10/3000 Val Lurune)

Accelerator (RVR-87/VSL Spessinef "Rusty Blood")

Mikoto Misaka (HBV-502-H8/VSL Raiden "Judge Igniters")

Virtuaroids will have a fourth weapon in the game, as opposed to the three present in previous Virtual-On installments. The fourth weapon will depend on the pilot riding the Virtuaroid, with the robot serving to enhance the character's abilities and offer new attacks. In addition, the game will have various stages for battle, including a university city stage.

As the title indicates, the game is a collaboration between Kazuma Kamachi's A Certain Magical Index light novel series and Sega's Virtual-On video game franchise. The "high speed battle action" game will ship in Japan for the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation Vita in 2018. Sega and Dengeki Bunko announced the game and began streaming a teaser video in March.

Kadokawa published a Toaru Majutsu no Index x Dennō Senki Virtual-On: Toaru Majutsu no Virtual-On (A Certain Magical Index x Cyber Troopers Virtual-On: A Certain Magical Virtual-On) collaborative novel (pictured at right) in May 2016. A Certain Magical Index light novelist Kazuma Kamachi wrote the novel, and Virtual-On designer Hajime Katoki illustrated the book.

Rōji Karegishi will launch the Toaru Majutsu no Index x Dennō Senki Virtual-On: Toaru Majutsu no Virtual-On (A Certain Magical Index x Cyber Troopers Virtual-On: A Certain Magical Virtual-On) manga in Kadokawa's Dengeki PlayStation magazine this fall. Kadokawa is launching the manga as part of the 25th anniversary celebrations for Dengeki.

Kazuma Kamachi's A Certain Magical Index light novel series has inspired two TV anime series, a 2013 anime film, and multiple manga adaptations. The A Certain Scientific Railgun spinoff manga has also inspired two TV anime adaptations and an OVA.

Sega's Cyber Troopers Virtual-On robot fighting game franchise debuted in Japanese and American arcades in 1996. The most recent game in the franchise, Cyber Troopers Virtual-On Marz, shipped on PlayStation 2 in 2003 and debuted on the PlayStation Network in 2013.
