Success Teases New Umihara Kawase Game for Nintendo Switch

posted on by Jennifer Sherman

Game developer Success teased the latest work in a series for Nintendo Switch at its Tokyo Game Show booth on Friday. The character silhouette on the poster appears to be the title character from the Umihara Kawase platform game series.

The original Umihara Kawase game shipped for the Super Famicom in Japan in 1994. The Umihara Kawase Shun game shipped for PlayStation in Japan in 1997. The most recent game, Sayonara Umihara Kawase Chirari, debuted in Japan for Nintendo 3DS in 2013, and for PlayStation Vita in 2015. Natsume released the game for Nintendo 3DS in North America under the title Yumi's Odd Odyssey in 2014, and the game launched for PS Vita in North America under the title Sayonara Umihara Kawase + in 2015.

Agatsuma Entertainment released the Umihara Kawase Trilogy game set on PC via Steam in 2015. The set includes Umihara Kawase, Umihara Kawase Shun, and Sayonara Umihara Kawase Chirari. The games were delisted from Steam in January 2016 after Agatsuma Entertainment shut down in December 2015. However, Degica acquired the rights to the games and relisted them on Steam later in January 2016.

In the games, the player controls the sushi chef Kawase Umihara, using her fishing rod to navigate the games' levels. Kiyoshi Sakai developed the game, and Toshinobu Kondō designed the characters and provided illustrations. Both worked on the original 1994 Umihara Kawase game.
