Who is Sally Amaki (22/7) and Why is She Going Viral

Who is Sally Amaki, the idol going viral on social media right now?

A member of 22/7, the newly debuted "digital voice actress idol group" created by the collaboration of Aniplex + Sony Music Records + Yasushi Akimoto (producer of the AKB48 franchise) is currently going viral on social media platforms for her native English and unique "bilingual personalities".

Sally Amaki is a LA native member of 22/7. She voices Sakura Fujima, illustrated by acclaimed illustrator Kantoku.

As a fluent speaker of both English and Japanese, videos of her speaking in English has gone viral over social media. It is already rare for Japanese idols to speak native English, but Sally Amaki has created a storm of interest with her “gap” between her personality when she speaks in English and Japanese.

The buzz around her started from SHOWROOM, a streaming mobile app/website which is popularly used by Japanese talents and idols. In her livestreams, Sally answered questions from her fans in both English and Japanese, and even answered requests to sing certain Japanese anime songs in English which caused her to go viral on Twitter internationally.

In Japanese, she gives the impression of a typical Japanese idol, whereas in English, she expresses her American-native side fully. In English, she has spoken out to fans about how much she misses the lack of “Taco Tuesday” and “Girl Scout Cookies”, her love for memes, and the LGBT community in Japan.

Here is an English comment from Sally Amaki on her new international popularity:

“The reason I decided to come to Japan is to become a voice actor. Words cannot explain how much anime helped me in my life and I feel like it's my time to give back what I've received. I took this audition in hopes of becoming a person that would make someone's day better just with the power of my voice.

I first started a section in my SHOWROOM where I would talk in English for 10minutes because I felt like people who couldn't speak Japanese were hesitant to comment. I really wanted to interact with everyone so that was my way of welcoming them in to come and talk to me. I'm so touched by all the support that everyone is giving me.

To be honest I'm just an ordinary girl fangirling over cute idols and fictional characters on the internet so I don't like calling people my 'fans' because they seem more like an internet friend to me.

Thank you so much for all the love! “-Sally Amaki

Idol group 22/7 (pronounced Nanabun no Nijyūni, which translates to “Twenty-two Sevenths”) made their major debut on September 20th, 2017 with their EP “Bokuwa Sonzai Shiteinakatta” which made a limited 10,000 copy release in Japan. 22/7 is an idol with a new and unique concept of “idols who cross dimensions”, where the idols are voice actresses who will perform as their respective anime idol characters which are each created by famous illustrators. Their animated music videos are created by motion capture CGI of the voice actresses matching the characters. Be sure to keep an eye out for their next move, along with Sally Amaki.

SALLY AMAKI ENGLISH COMMENT:

My name is Sally Amaki and I was born and raised in Los Angeles, California until I decided to move to Japan by myself to pursue my dreams of becoming a voice actor.

The character I play is called Sakura Fujima whose character was designed by Kantoku (known for Hentai Ōji to Warawanai Neko.). Please support my baby! She's precious.

The reason I decided to come to Japan to become a voice actor. Words cannot explain how much anime helped me in my life and I feel like it's my time to give back what I've received.

I feel like I understand them more than I understand how to live the idol life.

22/7( Nanabun no Nijyūni ) just debuted on September 20th and it feel surreal to be able to sell our debut single on iTunes worldwide!

This would not have happened without the support of everybody and I couldn't thank you all enough for this opportunity.

I'm really nervous about the idol life and while I'm not sure if I can act the part correctly, I'll try my best so I hope everybody can continue to support 22/7 until the very end!

Thank you so much for all the love!
