King of Prism Pride the Hero Anime Film Earns 600 Million Yen

2nd film spinoff of Pretty Rhythm franchise sells 340,000 tickets since June 10 opening

Mainichi Shimbun's Mantan Web news website reported on Saturday that the King of Prism: PRIDE the HERO anime film earned more than 600 million yen (about US$5.28 million) and sold more than 340,000 tickets at the Japanese box office. The film's DVD and Blu-ray Disc release in Japan is set for January 26.

The film opened in Japan on June 10, selling 47,000 tickets to earn 82 million yen (about US$746,000) in its opening weekend. The anime debuted at #7 at the box office and fell off the top 10 box office chart in its second weekend.

The film had earned more than 300 million yen (about US$2.6 million) as of July 5, after 26 days at the box office. The film launched 4DX screenings at 52 Japanese theaters on August 26.

Masakazu Hishida, who directed various Pretty Rhythm anime series, as well as the KING OF PRISM by PrettyRhythm film, returned to direct King of Prism: PRIDE the HERO at Tatsunoko Production. Jou Aoba (Pretty Rhythm Aurora Dream episode director) also returned to write the script. Mai Matsuura was again credited with the original character designs and character designs. The main cast members reprise their roles in the film, and Tomokazu Sugita plays the new character George Takadanobaba.

The previous film, KING OF PRISM by PrettyRhythm, opened in January 2016. The film screened at the Los Angeles Anime Film Festival (LA-AFF) event on September 16.

Both films are a spinoff of the Pretty Rhythm franchise, and center on the boys unit "Over the Rainbow."
