Street Fighter II's Car-Smashing Bonus Stage Gets VR Remake

posted on by Jennifer Sherman

Fans got a change to experience unique Street Fighter II nostalgia last weekend. The CAPCOM Pro Tour North American Finals competition offered a "Street Fighter II Bonus Stage Virtual Reality" experience for people who attended.

The event's exclusive VR app used the HTC Vive and its Vive Tracker peripherals to recreate the famous bonus stage (seen above) from the Street Fighter II fighting game. In the original 1991 arcade game's stage, players could use their favorite Street Fighter characters to destroy a car. In the VR version, players had the experience of using their own limbs to demolish the unfortunate car before a countdown ended. Upload VR's video below shows the remade bonus stage.

CAPCOM held a contest for the VR app at the event, where those who played the game could enter a lottery to win prizes. The grand prize winner received a custom Street Fighter V gaming cabinet, and first prize was an HTC Vive. Although "Street Fighter II Bonus Stage Virtual Reality" was exclusive to the event, some fans hope CAPCOM might release a free download in the future.

The CAPCOM Pro Tour North American Finals were held as part of the Red Bull Battle Grounds event at The Castle in Boston on November 18-19. The event also displayed a five-piece Street Fighter mural and held a T-Shirt Smash contest. In the contest, players wearing special T-shirts cooperated to recreate announced game moves.

CAPCOM's Street Fighter II game collaborated with car maker Toyota for promotional videos earlier this year.
