Cup Noodle's 'Hungry Days' Campaign Adds Teen Sazae-san

posted on by Lynzee Loveridge

Cup Noodle's ongoing "Hungry Days" campaign with manga artist Eisaku Kubonouchi (Chocolat, Cherry) has reimagined popular young anime heroines like Studio Ghibli's Kiki and Eiken's Heidi as older high school girls experiencing their first loves. The campaign is switching it up some, this time taking inspiration from the long-running Sazae-san anime series and going back in time to when Sazae and her future husband Masuo Fuguta met in their youth. The look is entirely different from the cute, cartoony aesthetic of the original show.

In the video, Masuo confesses to Sazae after finishing the school's cultural festival. While on the stage, he looks back at their high school memories and all the moments that made him fall in love with her. Her father can be seen looking on disapprovingly in the crowd. Sazae is voiced by Yū Wakui (Aikatsu!'s Sumire) and Masuo is voiced by Nobunaga Shimazaki (Free!'s Haruka). Viewers with a quick eye can also spot Sazae's mother, siblings, and pet cat.

The video began streaming on November 22, which is also read as "Īfūfu no Hi" or "Good Couple Day." It looks like the project decided one of anime's longest marriages should be honored on such an auspicious day.

The "Hungry Days" campaign is currently on the road for its planned exhibition tour. Kubonouchi will host the exhibitions where the original drawings from the two ads will be on display. Merchandise of the characters based on his new redesigns will also be on sale. The exhibition is currently in Taiwan after previously opening in Fukuoka and Tokyo.

Cup Noodle debuted its teaser ad for the "Hungry Days" campaign with the theme song "Kinen Satsuei" (Commemorative Photo) by BUMP OF CHICKEN in June. Tatsunoko Pro is animating the ads.
