Space Invaders Celebrates 40th Anniversary with 10-player Game in Skyscraper

posted on by Lynzee Loveridge

The classic arcade game reached new heights in Tokyo's Roppongi Hills district. An experimental interactive exhibition honoring the Video Game Hall of Fame title Space Invaders, "Space Invaders Gigamax" opened on January 12 to celebrate the game's 40th anniversary. The event will introduce new fans and entertain veterans and includes a 10-player edition of the arcade classic.

There are three different interactive games including the large-scale replica of Space Invaders. The 10-player game uses projection mapping against a seven meter by 15 meter window and is only available to play after dusk.

The second attraction reunites the Bahamut Disco with aliens. The dance attraction first took over Shibuya last year with burlesque dancers. Four dancers enter at a time and can let loose with 450-degrees worth of changing dimensions.

The venue has also outfitted a rock-climbing style game with Space Invaders. Noborinvaders uses projection mapping and invading enemies to create a unique climbing experience. Take out incoming aliens who appear on a 180-inch climbing wall and save Earth! The game is fun for even first time climbers.

The last attraction is Arkinvaders, where players kick a ball over a virtual field to shoot at the invaders.

All these games can work up an appetite. Visitors can head on over to a limited cafe and snack on some sweet and savory food and drinks.

Space Invaders debuted in arcades in Japan in 1978, followed by its introduction in American arcades later that same year. The iconic game puts players in control of a cannon guarding four bases from slowly descending rows of aliens. The game made an appearance in Sony Pictures Entertainment's live-action Pixels film.
