Console sold 1.5 million units

Nintendo announced via press release on Thursday that its Nintendo Switch console sold 1.5 million units within the United States in December, according to independent sales tracker NPD Group. According to Nintendo's report of NPD Group's results, the Switch sold more units than any other video game console.

Nintendo also reported that its Nintendo 3DS family of systems sold more than 750,000 units in the U.S. in December, a 27% increase over the same month last year and the best sales month since December 2014. The family of systems has sold more than 21 million units in the U.S., according to Nintendo's internal sales numbers.

Together, the Switch, 3DS, and SNES Classic Edition sold 2.6 million units in the U.S., which accounted for more than half of the total game hardware sold in the U.S. in December, according to Nintendo's report of the NPD Group's results.

Nintendo previously reported that that the Switch has sold 4.8 million units in the U.S., making it the region's fastest-selling home video game system. In Japan, the Switch has already surpassed the Wii U's lifetime sales.

Nintendo announced last month that the Nintendo Switch has sold more than 10 million units worldwide as of December 10.
