Makoto Shinkai Praises Mari Okada's 'Maquia' Anime Film

The perks of being an anime director include being able to go to advance private screenings for new anime before they debut. Makoto Shinkai, acclaimed director of your name., recently attended a private screening of Mari Okada's upcoming film Sayonara no Asa ni Yakusoku no Hana o Kazarō (Maquia - When the Promised Flower Blooms). He shared his thought on the film on Twitter on Friday:
[I went to] a private showing of Sayonara no Asa ni Yakusoku no Hana o Kazarō. It was a fantastic film that can shake up memories within you that you normally forget. It's a work directed by Mari Okada, who continues to exemplify anime's freshness, as she did as a scriptwriter. If you're faced with this much quality as a new director, you'll get jealous and impatient. We too have to put in our fighting spirit.
The film will open in Japan on February 24. The film will be the directorial debut of anime screenwriter Okada (The Anthem of the Heart, anohana). She is also writing the film's scripts at P.A. Works.
U.K. anime distributor Anime Limited will premiere the film in the U.K. and Ireland on March 4 under the title Maquia - When the Promised Flower Blooms. Anime Limited describes the story:
The people of Iolph have a lifespan of hundreds of years and maintain their teenage appearances for life, but when the peace of this town is shattered by those who want the secret to their longevity for themselves, a young girl named Maquia is forced to escape. Wandering the land alone, upon finding an orphaned baby she chooses to raise him, but as this boy grows up so the difference in their lifespans is thrown into ever-sharper relief.
