Manga Artists Recommend Their Favorite Rice Bowls in New Anthology

posted on by Lynzee Loveridge

What does a manga creator eat to power through deadlines and produce 30 pages a week? According to a new manga anthology, the answer is a lot of rice with tasty toppings. Mangaka no Gohan no Otomogatari (Story of Manga Creator's Rice Accompaniments) gathers 60 one-page manga about rice pairings by different artists like Chako Abeno (Sola, White Album) and Pochi Edoya (Magical Girl Raising Project).

White rice is known as a "staple food" in Japan, and many Japanese people eat it with every single meal. Although people often eat it plain, others add their favorite condiments, spices, and toppings to what could otherwise be a boring starch. In the book, Futari H creator Aki Katsu shared his favorite: eggs over rice with truffle salt.

Hiroki Ugawa (Shrine of the Morning Mist) chose mackerel shiokara (salted fermented seafood paste).

Kohji Azuma (Hitoha-kun, Hitori Bocchi?) picked salted salmon roe pickled in soy sauce.

Other participating artists include okama (Captain Earth, Aquarion), CUTEG (Kokoro Connect, If Her Flag Breaks), Hideaki Yoshikawa (The Other Side of Secret), Sankichi Meguro (Ghost Talker's Daydream), toi8 (Maoyu, No.8), Tiv (Masamune-kun's Revenge), Rui Takatō (Devilman Grimoire), Takahiro Seguchi (Sickness Unto Death), Shiro (Encouragement of Climb), Keito Koume (Spice & Wolf), Kaduho (Kill Me Baby), and Enokids (Kotoura-san).

The volume went on sale on March 17.
