Sanrio's Laziest Mascot Makes His Way to Outer Space

posted on by Lynzee Loveridge

Cold weather is setting in, the perfect atmosphere to make like Gudetama and do absolutely nothing. Sanrio's unmotivated egg mascot is usually all about taking it easy, like soaking in the bath or staying in bed and vegging out. Surprisingly, the little lethargic yolk has actually been reaching new heights despite his protests.

Sanrio sent Gudetama all the way to space with the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) to celebrate the mascot's fifth anniversary. The unlikely astronaut held a "press conference" at JAXA's headquarters after his return from the great blue yonder to show he did (and did not) get ready for his first space trip.

A video explains Gudetama's motivation to head into space. (Hint: he thought weightlessness would make life even easier).

A special website where fans can follow all of Gudetama's space adventures is also live. The site hosts a web game to capture space Gudetamas, a timeline of the character's life, and various merchandise.

Despite the mascot's attributed laziness, Gudetama is a popular collaboration partner. He paired with The Seven Deadly Sins anime series, Michael Bay's Transformers, Godzilla, and many more.
