PS Now Game Streaming Service Now Allows Downloads

Transferring save files from cloud to local unit requires PS Plus subscription

Sony announced on Thursday that it will now allow subscribers to its PlayStation Now game streaming service to download games, allowing players to either play the game offline, or stream it online. Sony noted that "almost all" PlayStation 4 games in the service will be available for download, in addition to the remastered PlayStation 2 games available on the service. The feature is being gradually rolled out to subscribers over the next few days.

Games downloaded over the service will support DLC, microtransactions, add-ons, and enhancements specific to the PlayStation 4 Pro. While playing multiplayer online does not require a PlayStation Plus membership for games played over PlayStation Now, transferring save files from the cloud to the local unit will require a PS Plus membership. PS4 systems are still required to connect to the Internet "every few days" to verify the user's PS Now subscription.

Sony fully launched the PlayStation Now service on PS4 in North America in January 2015, and on PS3 in May 2015. Sony also launched the service on its PlayStation Vita and PlayStation TV platforms, as well as its Bravia televisions and its Blu-ray Disc players; the company then added PC support in 2016. Sony discontinued the service on all these devices except for the PS4 and PC in 2017.
