About ONE PIECE
ONE PIECE is a Japanese manga and anime series. It follows Luffy, the straw hat-wearing hero, who quests to become the King of Pirates, and Luffy's crew. We are exposed to high-quality classical symphonic music in the movies, on TV, and through animations and video games. But for those unfamiliar with classical concerts, that exposure is limited to recordings and the music is secondary to the visual component of the entertainment. The ONE PIECE Music Symphony is a new concept - a multimedia journey that puts LIVE classical music front and centre, with best-of scenes from the world's favourite anime as a massive, highly engaging backdrop.
This is a format which makes classical music accessible to listeners of all ages, and is as appealing to avid ONE PIECE fans as classical music aficionados.The ONE PIECE Music Symphony provides audiences the opportunity to soak in the best moments of ONE PIECE. Projected onto a giant screen, and accompanied by live symphonic music written specifically for the series and movies, it is a rich experience of sight and sound.
All the action, emotions, thrills, and touching moments on-screen will be perfectly matched by the full orchestra. Conducted by Jean Thorel with as many as 55 musicians on-stage, the symphonic concert alone is a moving and exciting performance. Special guest Kohei Tanaka, the renowned composer of ONE PIECE, whose compositions are masterfully orchestrated for “hot” strings and piano will appear as the concert's master of ceremonies, and will also perform as a guest pianist and as a guest conductor throughout the concert.
ONE PIECE Music Symphony first debuted in Hong Kong in July 2013. The concert's European debut captivated close to 4,000 people in Paris in April, 2014. Both concerts drew large crowds of anime and ONE PIECE fans, classical music lovers and families. London will be the third performance of this unique time” when it becomes a global success story.
Kohei Tanaka, composer
Japanese composer, arranger and singer Kohei Tanaka has written the musical scores for numerous famous anime TV series, OVAs, movies, computer games and tokusatsu series, among them ONE PIECE, Sakura Taisen, Jojo's Bizarre Adventure and Gunbuster!
Tanaka began playing the piano at an early age. After graduating from the Osaka Seiko Gakuin High School, Tanaka attended Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music for music composition, notably studying under Tomojirō Ikenouchi. Tanaka worked for three years at the advertising department of Victor Music Industries after his graduation. Thereafter, he attended the Berkley College of Music in Boston, Massachusetts, for two years and then returned to Japan to work as both a pianist and a composer. At that time, he was requested to arrange a song in Arcadia of My Youth: Endless Orbit SSX, a 1982 TV anime program. It was his first work as a composer. He next produced some songs and arrangements for the Super Sentai series, and his first position as the main composer for a project was for the TV anime series Konpora Kid in 1985. His compositions for TV are audience-friendly and demonstrate his mastery of “hot” string sounds with piano, brass instruments and timpani. Tanaka has also composed music for the computer game, Sakura Wars Project, which provided him with the opportunity to experiment composition in other musical genres.
Jean Thorel, chief conductor
Appointed chief conductor of the City Chamber Orchestra of Hong Kong in 2008, Jean Thorel has given over 400 world premieres of modern works internationally. In Hong Kong, he has been praised as a “passionate musician from France. In his performance he strived for perfection without exaggerating. He was instrumental in leading the orchestra to give a fine, delicate and uplifting performance”. - Express Weekly
The Royal Philarmonic Concert Orchestra
The Royal Philharmonic Concert Orchestra was formed in 1987 and has built up an international reputation in its own right. Performing in the major concert halls and concert venues in the UK and around the world, from China and the Far East to North and South America, the RPCO is known for its versatile programming of classical, light classical and popular music. The RPCO is regularly seen working with renowned artists in the worlds of classical music, pop music and West End musicals. Appearances during 2013 include the Hastings International Piano Concerto Competition, an Elgar celebration concert in his home town of Malvern on the composer's birthday and live performances to the screening of two iconic films at the Royal Albert Hall: Singin' in the Rain and Fantasia. Appearances at the summer festivals include Hampton Court Palace, Kenwood House, Canary Wharf and Rochester Castle. Touring commitments this year include concerts as far afield as Gabon, Kazakhstan and China.
