Tohoku's Sendai Airport To Feature Katsuhiro Otomo Mural

posted on by Bamboo Dong

Visitors flying into Tohoku's Sendai Airport after March 2015 will have reason to loiter around the terminal building just a little longer. The airport is planning on displaying a 24 m² (~ 258 ft²) ceramic relief based on a design by Akira creator and famed director Katsuhiro Ōtomo, who grew up in Tome, Miyagi Prefecture, part of the Tohoku region.

The mural's theme is "Accompanied by Fujin (god of wind) and Raijin (god of thunder) the boy rides against nature's might towards the future he desires."

The relief is being created by a group of artists from Creare studios, and is funded by the Japan Lottery Association, with planning from the Japan Traffic Culture Association, which aims to install public art works in various stations and airports around Japan.
