Director Guillermo del Toro Talks Pacific Rim 2 Plot Details

Director Guillermo del Toro revealed some of the plot details and setting for the Pacific Rim live-action film sequel. Del Toro stated that the sequel will take place a few years after the events in the original film, and that the world is now Kaiju-free.

"It's a few years after the first one. It's not an immediate follow-up. It is the world having been freed of Kaiju, what happens to the world after – what happens to the Jaeger technology once the Kaiju are not a threat. It's quite a jump,” del Toro said. He added that he thinks the characters played by actors Charlie Day (Dr. Newton Geiszler) and Burn Gorman (Gottlieb) will return. The film will have new monsters and new robots, too.

"...the Kaijus are very different and you're gonna see a very different type of the robots I think. It's gonna be quite a different adventure,” del Toro said.

Zak Penn and Travis Beacham are returning to write the film with del Toro, and an animated series is also in the works. Universal will open Pacific Rim 2 in 3D and IMAX on April 7, 2017. Warner Brothers had distributed the first film, but Legendary ended their co-financing and co-producing deal at the end of last year. (Legendary and Warner are still "moving forward" with a sequel to Gareth Edwards' Godzilla remake film.) Legendary's Thomas Tull and Jon Jashni is returning to produce with del Toro, Mary Parent and Callum Greene. Jillian Share is an executive producer.

The director told BuzzFeed that he would like the characters Raleigh (Charlie Hunnam), Mako (Rinko Kikuchi), "and who knows, maybe even Hannibal Chau" (Ron Perlman) to return, "but we are taking them into a fresh territory that will display amazing sights and battles. The first film set the stage and now we're ready to have a blast."
