Princess Kaguya, Adventure Time Shut Out of Annie Awards

posted on by Egan Loo

Isao Takahata and Studio Ghibli's film The Tale of the Princess Kaguya did not win any awards at the 42nd Annual Annie Awards on Saturday. It was nominated in three categories: Best Animated Feature, Directing in an Animated Feature Production for Takahata, and Music in an Animated Feature Production for composer Joe Hisaishi.

How to Train Your Dragon 2, along with its director Dean DeBlois and composers John Powell and Jónsi, won the awards in those three categories. How to Train Your Dragon 2 also won in the Character Animation in an Animated Feature Production, Editorial in an Animated Feature Production, and Storyboarding in an Animated Feature Production for a total of six awards — the most of any title this year.

Masaaki Yuasa and Eunyoung Choi were also nominated for "Outstanding Achievement, Directing in an Animated TV/Broadcast Production" for their Adventure Time episode "Food Chain," but lost to Aaron Springer of Disney Mickey Mouse.

The Tale of the Princess Kaguya was screened at Cannes Film Festival's Directors' Fortnight but did not receive any awards. The Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) held its North American premiere on September 8. The Fantastic Fest in Texas then hosted the United States premiere, and it gave the movie the Audience Award on September 23.

The film won the Animation Film Award at the 68th Mainichi Film Awards, Best Animation from the L.A. Film Critics Awards, and Best Animated Film from the Boston Film Critics Society. It then won for Best Animated Feature Film at the eighth Asia Pacific Screen Awards (APSA). The film was nominated in the Animated Feature Film category for the 87th Academy Awards.

Universal Studios Home Entertainment will release The Tale of the Princess Kaguya in a Blu-ray combo pack in North America on February 17.
