Mangaka: The Fast & Furious Games of Drawing Comics Now on Kickstarter

March 26, 2015

ENTER MANGAKA: THE FAST & FURIOUS GAME OF DRAWING COMICS!

"This fantastic new game combines the frantic drawing of Pictionary with the creative storytelling of Once Upon a Time…It has one of the most important qualities a game can have: it's just fun."—Gregory Marques, Professional Game Designer

"Oh my gosh, it was one of the best games I ever played…It's super cool!"—Jadah, 8th grader

SAN FRANCISCO, CA: Jason Thompson and Jumana Al Hashal are proud to announce the Kickstarter launch of Mangaka, a creative fast-paced card game where players draw stories combining wild Themes & an ever-growing number of fleeting Trends!

In development since 2011, Mangaka is a new twist on creative games with an anime & manga theme. Designed by former VIZ Shonen Jump editor Jason Thompson (Manga: The Complete Guide, King of RPGs), produced by Jumana Al Hashal, and playtested at anime conventions, comic conventions, libraries and game stores, Mangaka lets you challenge your friends and your creativity in a battle against time.

Start by drawing three Theme Cards to determine the subject of your comic. With 180,000 possible combinations of Themes, each game is different. Then, you and the other players must draw comics and express your Themes before time runs out. Fleeting Trend Cards add another dimension of strategy: your fickle audience may demand Science Fiction, Fantasy, Shojo Manga, Sports, Destruction or any one of 52 Trends. Each round the number of Panels and Trends goes up, forcing you to make tough decisions under deadline to get it all done…if you can! When the final round ends, every player has a comic of their own creation…but only the person with the most Fame tokens earns the coveted title of Mangaka!

“Our goal was to make a game that combines the fun of making comics with your friends with the strategies of a great card game,” Thompson said. “The fact that you only have a few minutes to draw levels the playing field between people who draw a lot and people who don't. The point is to get the idea across and have fun exercising your creativity…and devising strategies to get the most Fame. Each round has more Fame in play than the round before, so the outcome is up in the air till the very end!”

Mangaka features beautiful art by Ike (manga artist of Nekomusume Michikusa Nikki and illustrator of the tabletop RPG Golden Sky Stories) and Eric "Woof" Muentes (@woofycakes; illustrator and lead artist of the Steam game Blue Revolver). The Mangaka logo kanji was drawn by sumi-e artist Masaharu Eguchi.

The Kickstarter intends to raise $25,000 which will fund the remaining art and production costs for a complete game in box: 52 Trends, 104 Theme Cards, 200 Fame Tokens, 4 Pens and 64 pre-printed Comic Pages (or download and print more from the Mangaka web site). Stretch goals include customized timers, additional Theme Cards and more. In addition to the game, backer rewards include stickers, buttons, posters, a specially printed hachimaki (headband) reading “MANGA,” custom comics and sketches by Eric and Jason, and a set of 5 beautiful “Manga Trophies” sculpted by USShonen Jump illustrator Adam Burns.

Mangaka is a game for 1-8 players. For more information, contact Jason Thompson at [email protected] or on Twitter at @mockman.
