Crowdfunding Underway for Light-Up Hikaru Skirt

A crowdfunding project is underway for the "wearable special effects" skirt project, "Hikaru Skirt" (Shining Skirt) on Makuake. The skirt comes with an LED light that turns the "zettai ryōiki" (i.e. the "absolute territory" between where a girl's skirt ends and her stockings begin) into "komorebi ryōiki,"or "territory where sunshine filters through the trees."

Hikaru Skirt's creative designer, Kiyoyuki Amano, and its fashion designer, Miyabi, explain that they intended the skirt to be comfortable enough for daily wear yet cute and fashionable. Amano hopes that he will see people wearing it in Harajuku or Shibuya (Tokyo's most fashion-conscious districts) someday. The skirt can be ordered with the vest or coordinated with other tops.

Supporters who donate 1,000 yen ($8) will receive a thank-you letter, while those who donate 18,000 yen ($149) will receive the skirt in October. Donating 23,000 yen ($190) will earn the supporter both the skirt and the vest. The funding drive has so far raised 385,000 yen ($3,179) out of a goal of 3.9 million yen ($32,200) with nine days left.

The light can be switched on and off with a smartphone app, which also changes its color and coordinates it with music to maximize the effect for clubbing. The light has a battery life of three hours; using the light for longer than that is not recommended anyway because of the heat it emits. The light is also detachable so the skirt can be washed safely.

Hikaru Skirt has appeared already in a music video for the J-pop group Mōsō Calibration. Mōsō Calibration perform on the Dear Stage in Akihabara which also hosts the Dempagumi, Inc. idol group. Mōsō Calibration performed live in the Hikaru Skirts on May 15 during their Mōsō Fantasia event. The members utilize the skirts' different color options for each of their outfits.
