Love Live! Film Tops Japanese Box Office for Tickets Sold for 3rd Straight Week (Updated)

The Love Live! The School Idol Movie film sold 188,004 tickets during its third weekend at the box office from June 27-28, earning 267,161,780 yen (about US$2.2 million) in the two days. The film's total earnings is now nearing 1.2 billion yen (about US$9.8 million). The film ranked at #1 in the Japanese box office in terms of earnings for the weekend. The film also ranked at #1 in terms of tickets sold for the third straight week.
Love Live! The School Idol Movie sold 251,811 tickets in its first weekend, earning 400,235,800 yen (about US$3,240,900). The film ranked at #1 in terms of amount of tickets sold and box office earnings, beating out Our Little Sister, the live-action film adaptation of Akimi Yoshida's (Banana Fish) Umimachi Diary manga.
The film will premiere in select cities in the United States on September 12. The film will also screen in Australia, New Zealand, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Korea, Thailand, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Vietnam, Brunei, and Indonesia.
The second Attack on Titan anime compilation film, Shingeki no Kyojin Kōhen ~Jiyū no Tsubasa~, debuted at #10 in the box office this week. The film opened on 78 screens, sold 33,362 tickets, and earned 47,706,500 yen (about US$390 thousand) in two days.
The films feature new dubbing and a 5.1ch remaster with returning voice cast members such as Yūki Kaji (Eren Jaeger), Yui Ishikawa (Mikasa Ackerman), and Marina Inoue (Armin Arlelt). The first film covers episodes 1 through 13 of the television anime, while the second film will cover 14 through 25. Director Tetsuro Araki is again helming the anime at Wit Studio with composer Hiroyuki Sawano.
The first film, Shingeki no Kyojin Zenpen ~Guren no Yumiya~ (Attack on Titan Part I: Crimson Bow and Arrow), opened on 53 screens in Japan on November 22.
In addition, the live-action adaptations of Umimachi Diary and Prophecy (Yokokuhan) ranked #3 and #5, respectively.
Update: Love Live! The School Idol Movie has ranked at #1 in terms of tickets sold for three straight weeks. While the film debuted at #1 during the June 13-14 weekend in terms of earnings, it slipped to #2 just behind Mad Max: Fury Road in its second weekend. Thanks, molibdaenum and Ejc.
