1st film to premiere July 14 in LA, ahead of Japanese premiere

FUNimation Entertainment announced on Monday that it has licensed the live-action Attack on Titan films for North, Central, and South America. The license includes theatrical, video-on-demand, home video, and broadcast rights.

In addition, Funimation will host the world premiere of the first film at Los Angeles' Egyptian Theater on July 14. Haruma Miura (Eren), Kiko Mizuhara (Mikasa) and director Shinji Higuchi will attend the red-carpet premiere. The films will open for general audiences in Japan on August 1 and September 19.

Higuchi will also appear at Funimation's booth at San Diego Comic-Con on Sunday, July 12.

Higuchi stated that, with the supervision of Attack on Titan manga creator Hajime Isayama, the story is based on the world and characters of the manga, while incorporating new characters and new formidable enemies. Yuusuke Watanabe (Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods, live-action Gantz, Gantz II: Perfect Answer, 20th Century Boys, Gatchaman) wrote the scripts. Film critic Tomohiro Machiyama, who is also friends with Isayama, worked on the scripts together with Isayama and Watanabe.

Isayama's manga and the films depict the battles between humans and the giants who now rule the world outside humans' walled enclaves.

Madman will screen the movies in theaters in Australia and New Zealand this year. The company began streaming an English-subtitled trailer on Saturday.
