posted on by Eric Stimson
Play tells tale of Italian lady pirate

A theatrical adaptation of Onna Kaizoku Bianca ("Pirate Woman Bianca"), a play performed in the manga and anime Glass Mask, will be staged from September 9 to 13 at the AiiA 2.5 Theater Tokyo in Shibuya. The cast includes Fūka Yuzuki as Bianca Castagni (the lead role played in the manga by Maya), Masakazu Nemoto as Silver, Keisuke Kaminaga as Lorenzo, and Motohisa Harashima as Alberto. The play was originally performed in Tokyo in November 2013 and in Osaka in April 2014; some roles have been recast, including Ray Fujita as Vicente and Kenji Mitamura as Duke Castagni. (The images in this article are taken from the earlier performances.)

The story is set off the coast of Italy, where pirates capture a Genoese ship. They discover that one of the men on board is not a man at all, but Bianca Castagni, the daughter of a prominent duke in opposition to Genoa. She had been married into the Genoese ducal family to secure peace, but political opponents of the Castagnis had driven her into exile. Now she must become one of the pirates.

Tickets may be preordered beginning on August 1 on e+, Ticketpia, and LAWSON; they cost 6,800 yen (or about $55). The Glass Mask manga began in 1975 and has still not ended, although Suzue Miuchi, its artist, claims that she is approaching the conclusion.
