Sanrio's American Branch Plans Hello Kitty Film for 2019

posted on by Karen Ressler
Budget estimated at 20 to 30 billion yen

Sanrio announced on Thursday that it is planning a new Hello Kitty film for 2019. The film will be produced at Sanrio's new American subsidiary, Sanrio Media & Pictures Entertainment.

The film has an estimated production budget of 20 to 30 billion yen (about US$160 million-240 million). Sanrio's films and animated works in Japan typically have a budget of several hundred million yen (several million US dollars).

Sanrio Media & Pictures Entertainment was established on June 23 with the goal of creating animated works and films that will be able to compete with films made in Hollywood. Sanrio is planning films based on its own characters and characters from other companies.

Sanrio granted Fox Animation the rights in January to produce a film based on Sanrio's Mr. Men and Little Miss brands. Sanrio acquired the characters, created by late English author Roger Hargreaves, in 2011.
