Rumiko Takahashi's Rin-ne Anime Casts Aya Endo, Fumi Hirano

Endo plays Kain's mother; character debuting in show's 18th episode on Saturday

NHK's official website for the Kyōkai no Rinne television anime revealed on Monday that the show has cast Aya Endō (Macross Frontier's Sheryl, Yuri Kuma Arashi's Reia) as Kain's mother, and Fumi Hirano (Urusei Yatsura's Lum, Tokyo Ravens' Miyo) as Sakura's mother. Kain's mother will debut in the show's 18th episode airing on Saturday, while Sakura's mother will debut in the show's 20th episode on August 15, though the character has already appeared visually in the show's 17th episode last Saturday (as shown below).

The television anime premiered on April 4 on the public broadcaster NHK's E Tele channel. Crunchyroll is streaming the series as it airs in Japan. Sentai Filmworks licensed the series for release in North America.

The anime adapts Rumiko Takahashi's supernatural manga Kyōkai no Rinne (RIN-NE of the Boundary or RIN-NE). Viz, the publisher of most of Takahashi's manga in North America, describes RIN-NE's story:

As a child Sakura Mamiya mysteriously disappeared in the woods behind her grandma's home. She returned whole and healthy, but since then she has had the power to see ghosts. Now a teenager, she just wishes the ghosts would leave her alone! At school, the desk next to Sakura's has been empty since the start of the school year. Then one day her always-absent classmate Rinne Rokudo shows up, and he's far more than what he seems!

KEYTALK performed the anime's first opening theme song "Ōkaranman," and Passepied performed the first ending theme song "Tokinowa." NHK's official website previously announced that Passepied will perform the new opening theme song "Ura no Ura" (Back of the Back), and Quruli will perform the new ending song "Futatsu no Sekai" (Two Worlds). Both will debut in the anime's 14th episode on July 4.

The anime will run for 25 episodes. Seiki Sugawara (D-Fragments) is directing the anime at Brains Base (One Week Friends), and Michiko Yokote (Ranma ½, Shirobako) is in charge of the series scripts. Akimitsu Honma is composing the music, and NHK Enterprises, NHK, and Shogakukan Shueisha Production are producing.
