Miss Hokusai Wins at APSA 2015

November 26, 2015

Keiichi Hara's Annecy-winning latest directorial effort, "Miss Hokusai" was awarded Best Animated Feature Film at the 9th annual Asia Pacific Screen Awards. The award ceremony was held on November 26, 2015 at the Brisbane City Hall, Australia.

Based on the original comic book "Sarusuberi" (Crape Myrtle) by Hinako Sugiura and set in early XIX century Japan, "Miss Hokusai" focuses on O-Ei, the little-known daughter of famous Japanese artist Hokusai, and it is a lively portrayal of a free-spirited, utterly outspoken and highly talented woman unfolding through the changing seasons: “We're father and daughter; with two brushes and four chopsticks, we'll get by anywhere.”

The film won the Jury Award at Annecy 2015; the Satoshi Kon Award for Best Animated Film, the Audience Gold Award for Best Animated Film and the Prix Sequences for Best Asian Film at Fantasia 2015; the Best Animated Feature Film Award at Sitges 2015; the Jury Award at Scotland Loves Animation 2015; and the Grand Prize at the Bucheon International Film Festival. French newspaper Le Monde described the film as "a lesson of elegance."

The other nominees in the same Animated Film category included "When Marnie Was There" by Hiromasa Yonebayashi (Japan), "The Road Called Life" by Ahn Jae-hoon (Republic of Korea), "The Snow Queen 2: The Snow King" by Aleksey Tsitsilin (Russian Federation), and Blinky Bill The Movie by Deane Taylor, Noel Cleary, Alexs Stadermann, and Alex Weight (Australia).

The Asia Pacific Screen Awards (APSAs) acclaims, at a global level, the cinematic excellence and cultural diversity of the vast Asia-Pacific region. Supported by UNESCO and FIAPF-International Federation of Film Producers' Associations, the initiative honours the works of filmmakers across a vast region stretching from Egypt in the west to the Cook Islands in the east, and from Russia in the north to New Zealand in the south. In total, an area representing 4.5 billion people; 60 percent of the global population; 70 countries and areas; one third of the earth; and half the world's film output.

290 films from 41 countries and territories were considered in competition for the APSAs 2015, and 39 films from 22 countries and territories were nominated.

"Miss Hokusai" is the fourth Japanese animated film to receive the award, after "5 Centimeters Per Second" (2007), "A Letter to Momo" (2012) and "The Tale of the Princess Kaguya" (2014).

"Miss Hokusai" is also the fourth film from Production I.G the have been nominated for the APSAs, along with Mamoru Oshii's "The Sky Crawlers", Shinsuke Saito's "Oblivion Island" and Hiroyuki Okiura's "A Letter to Momo."
