Ah nice, a manga museum would be pretty cool on top of the other cultural attractions they could highlight during the during the Olympics (also I love the fact that the Prime Minister is a manga fan Smile ), although I was wondering if they were starting it from scratch or renovating an existing build?

If the collection is just as good or bigger than the Kyoto attraction, then they've got something going for them in the run-up to the main event.

As long as there is a wide variety of manga of interesting sorts to choose from, I can see this faring very well. Smile

I'd like to hope that the museum would have more than just manga to read and anime to watch. Otherwise, I don't see this being very popular with foreign tourists, many of whom probably can't understand Japanese. I also don't know how much of a priority going to a museum that would more or less function like a big library would be with foreigners, most of whom probably want to see the sites and not read manga/anime that they could do when they're at home.

As a museum, I would like to hope that it would showcase artwork used to make anime and manga, such as production artwork or the original manuscripts that mangaka submit to their respective magazines. A lot of these original pages have been popping up on Yahoo Japan lately, and it would make more sense to conserve them, especially for popular artists and titles.

If it's aimed at tourists (and Cool Japan's focus is to appeal to non-Japanese), then they'll likely have popular manga in a bunch of different languages. Or maybe just English, I don't know.

Media museums tend to be library-like though. At least the ones I've been to, they serve as archives and have a lot of rare works. You request a title, and they look for it and bring it to you. They're not like normal art, history, or science museums.

Yes, very likely.
Kyoto Manga Museum has manga in different languages (Korean, Chinese, English, Portuguese, German, French, etc), and even some "manhwa", for example.

Japan really seems to be going all out for the 2020 Olympics who knows what they're come up with next before the Olympic Games start. Smile

Will the new museum have a unique appearance, such as one sees with the Osamu Tezuka Manga Museum in Takarazuka:

or the Ishinomaki Manga Museum?
