Three things are certain in life, death, taxes and a new student getting suspended for having a death note every so often!

Serves her right! Kids shouldn't even be writing Death Lists anyway. They pretty much want those people to die, making them out to look psychotic. Anyone who thinks up a Death List should go to a hospital or see a psychiatrist.

Er, Death Note did run on TV in the States, didn't it?

The article said it was a prop for an event, not a serious "these people should die" thing. Even if it was an actual list, "serves her right" is kind of the worst response.

The live-action? The fact that it will never be on American TV has nothing to do with the content, live-action dramas never make it here.

Well, I realize it was a prop, and kids make stupid mistakes being kids and all, but I wonder if the suspension could have been avoided had the student not put actual names of people in the "death note."

Theater majors crave authenticity. Go hard or go home.

Agreed; prop or not, that's where the perpetrators cross the line on incidents like this.

Besides, if you're going to be truly authentic then put the names of characters from the series in it.

While I agree that bringing a 'Death Note' to school with fellow student names in it, I would much rather her take out her aggression by writing down names instead of acting upon it. It's hard for me to criticize this girl when we all did stupid things as teens that, had we done them today, would have gotten us into serious trouble.

I think the school handled it as well as they could have. If they had chosen not to do anything, parents would have complained that the child could have had murderous intentions. I would like to hope in the future that, perhaps 'Fandom Day' could omit certain students from dressing from characters from certain properties, such as those like Death Note or others where characters are provocatively dressed.

This just sounds like a misunderstanding on the part of school officials and the student in question trying to be realistic in a creative act and it being misinterpreted.

In short someone tried to do something creative and because those in authority didn't understand the context of the act they assumed the worst.

Or it could simply be Zero Tolerance policies the takeaway seems to be best to assume people are going to assume the worst if they don't understand your "weird" hobby. In short "hide your power level" because some people will just never get it.

This is one of those things that I find extremely silly. We're so scared as a nation that even fictional killing death notes become something we take stupidly seriously. We need to get our priorities straight.
