Wow, very cool. That made me want to travel the world even more than I already do!
I guess I'll settle for rewatching anohana for the time being.

I've been to Chichibu multiple times since I lived out on the same Red Arrow line that goes there in western Saitama for years.

Aside from the anohana stuff that started flooding in there, it's got a number of great shrines and hiking trails, and if you go north from Chichibu a bit there's even traditional river rafting in the summer.

Also for train buffs, once or twice a year they do a special run of an actual SL (steam locomotive) alone the chichibu line.
There are onsens and ryokans and it's not very crowded with tourists from Tokyo (or at least, it wasn't the couple of times I went there), as it's a lot less popular than like Mt. Mitaka or Mt. Takao which are the more popular "mountains west of tokyo reachable in a day trip" destinations.

Something that might have been worth mentioning is that not only are anohana and Anthem of the Heart both set in the city, but they were also both written by Mari Okada, who happens to be a Chichibu native.

But yeah, I definitely want to go visit the place the next time I'm in the Tokyo area, those views look gorgeous and I don't really mind long walks.

Okada is definitely gave best thing for her hometown. And I need to save up money for vacation to Japan.

I visited Chichibu in 2014, but my primary goal was not to see locations from Anohana. When I arrived I rented a bike at the station to quickly travel toward ... the street from the last episode of Maria-Sama ga Miteru (the one where Touko and Yumi do some serious emotional bonding). Luckily, I did see Anohana before I went (knowing it takes place there), and used the occasion to see some of the show's locations, and I still managed to see a fair share of them.

It was nice, but I found all the merchandising there a bit off-putting. I understand how local business wants to profit from the tourism caused by appearing in some famous anime, but it still broke the illusion somewhat for me. Still, it was a beautiful day, and I will never again view that scene from Marimite the same way again.
